Armitage to back Clinton over Trump

Former Reagan and Bush appointee is highest-ranking Republican to break ranks for Hillary.

Richard Armitage, the deputy secretary of state under George W. Bush, says he will vote for Hillary Clinton over Donald Trump, in one of the most dramatic signs yet that Republican national security elites are rejecting their party’s presumptive nominee.

Armitage, a retired Navy officer who also served as an assistant secretary of defense under Ronald Reagan, is thought by Clinton aides to be the highest-ranking former GOP national security official to openly support Clinton over Trump.

“If Donald Trump is the nominee, I would vote for Hillary Clinton,” Armitage told POLITICO in a brief interview. “He doesn't appear to be a Republican, he doesn't appear to want to learn about issues. So, I’m going to vote for Mrs. Clinton.”

Dozens of Republican foreign policy elites have already declared their unwillingness to support or work for Trump, though far fewer say they would cast a ballot for Clinton. The latter group includes Max Boot, a prominent neoconservative military analyst and historian; Mark Salter, former longtime chief of staff to Republican Sen. John McCain; and retired Army Col. Peter Mansour, a former top aide to retired Gen. David Petraeus.

People have many choices. Staying home. Voting third party. If we want Hillary Clinton to win, we have to earn the votes of Sanders voters, not say blasé things like "they have the same choice as the rest of us."

As we all should have learned during primary season, there is distrust between the supporters of the two Dem candidates. That won't disappear on its own. It means the Hillary campaign must be smart about reaching out and healing wounds.

Your comments are not only unhelpful, they read as if you have no idea understanding that elections are about turnout. Suppressing turnout does not help Dems.

I said that they - meaning Republicans - have two choices and are choosing accordingly. In this case - and likely in many more - their choice is Clinton because Trump is a nutjob.

I wasn't talking about DU. This thread isn't about DU. It's about a Republican endorsing Clinton, which I, unlike the person who posted this thread and about a dozen others, have no problem with. The more, the merrier.

I read what you wrote. It said, in full,

"No, there are two options in this race. As for the OP, he's posting these endorsements sarcastically. I am treating them accordingly."

You didn't say "they" and therefore could not have been referring to any "they."

And comments like "This thread isn't about DU" are irrelevant. If you want to respond to the OP, respond to the OP. If you respond to me, please stay on topic. And my topic was that Armitage endorsing Clinton is not helpful in consolidating the Democratic vote. Sentiments like "you have two choices where ya gonna go" actually are not helpful in consolidating that vote. They are going to sound insensitive and arrogant. We should be strategizing on how to drive D turnout, not saying insensitive things that will drive folks to stay home.
