House GOP Caves on Gun Vote

https://politicalwire.com/2016/06/30/house-gop-caves-on-gun-vote/

"SNIP...........

A week after Democrats staged a nearly 26-hour sit-in demanding a vote on gun control measures, Speaker Paul Ryan (R-WI) said the House will vote next week on legislation to block suspected terrorists from buying guns,” The Hill reports.

“Democrats launched an historic, daylong protest on the House floor last week demanding a vote on such legislation in the wake of the Orlando shooting rampage that killed 49… Ryan has dismissed the sit-in as a ‘publicity stunt’ and said Republicans will be ready for the next one.”

1. If Ryan thinks the sit-in was a stunt, maybe he should read his own proposed legislation.

2. Repub refusal to hold a House vote is actually quite interesting.

They have the numbers to vote down any gun control legislation they want. They could have ended the sit-in immediately by scheduling a vote. They refused to do so which suggests they do not want to go n record as opposing the issue with their votes. By tacking on a trivial amendment to a bill (which itself may not pass), the Repubs stand to lose a lot less face, unless another horrific mass shooting occurs just before the vote.

They don't want their wedge issues used as a wedge against them. After this fails they can say "we tried".

4. "Publicity stunt" leads to serious vote!

In a conference call Thursday, Ryan told rank-and-file Republicans that the House will take up a terrorism package that will include measures to disrupt radicalization and recruitment, as well as a provision to prevent suspected terrorists from purchasing guns, according to a source on the call.

Ryan on the call reiterated that it’s important to ensure suspected terrorists can't obtain guns, calling it common sense. But the Speaker said he wanted to approach the issue deliberatively to protect due process and Second Amendment rights.

The House next week will also take up a bipartisan bill by Rep. Tim Murphy (R-Pa.) that seeks to address gun violence by overhauling the mental health system. That bill recently cleared the Energy and Commerce Committee.

Instead, Democrats want a vote on legislation that would bar firearm sales to anyone on a terrorism watch list or no-fly list.

I bet our Reps and Senators would like to hear from us! Especially Speaker Ryan!

"No fly, no freakin' buy!"

7. the "publicity stunt" charge is funny because it *was* a publicity stunt, that's the whole point!

it was something dramatic done in order to get major media attention and bring national public pressure on the republicans.

that's pretty much the definition of a publicity stunt.

it's just that republicans aren't used to publicity stunts being used properly, for a legitimate cause. they only use them for pointless self-promotion.
