2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum"I communicate classified information of a totally separate system"
That's what Hillary said last night and it really struck a cord with me. That's the first time I've heard that, was it for you ? It makes a MASSIVE difference because people were nearly expecting those 60,000 emails to be full of classified info. It was never made clear (not to me anyway) that there was this whole other Hillary email address that was within the secure State Dept network. I had been wondering recently that if there were no classified emails on Hillary's server, then where were they ? This answers it.

(26,582 posts)There are completely separate networks for unclassified information and classified. They don't even talk to one another.

(19,908 posts)Getting at is that I bet there are millions of voters who don't realise that this is the case. The narrative in their heads is that all her emails were on this private server.

(4,187 posts)and I'm also far from computer-illiterate. (I've worked for years as a software developer.) I did not know it because it was never mentioned. The media never bothered to mention this, perhaps because once you learn about it, you realize there is really very little reason to criticize Hillary for using a separate server for non-classified e-mails.

(1,752 posts)not being reported due to lazy for-profit news reporting that values conflict over understanding....or all of the above..... I dunno.
This needs to be screamed from the rooftops. Im NOT in IT, not particularly computer savvy either - wide swaths of US society have no clue. All they hear is the republican disinformation.

(146,192 posts)Please quote accurately, if you don't mind. Hillary speaks grammatically correctly. If you use quotation marks, try copy and paste for better accuracy. Thanks.

(146,192 posts)Two errors in one sentence? That's not a typo. It's just sloppy.
If you're going to quote a presidential candidate, at least try to get it right. That'd be great...

I'll await the typo discovery.

(146,192 posts)Really? That's sort of a weird thing to write, I think.

(4,187 posts)It's hard to understand what the title is saying because it doesn't make sense grammatically. It's therefore hard at first to realize who is being quoted, for reasons Mineral Man has stated. Why not just fix it, rather than attack those who point this out? Why purposefully leave a title incorrect and confusing?

(11,605 posts)I feel like the reports that have come out recently have actually exonerated her, but by now most people are convinced she is lying because she hasn't been able to articulate it consistently. I am guessing that her inability to do so stems from the fact that she is not all that tech savvy and probably didn't fully understand how her server worked. But unfortunately the media and many voters have assumed more sinister motives.

(19,908 posts)It's hard to see how the Clinton Campaign can change that with 60 days to go. Perhaps worth starting now with a view to her Presidency.

(5,624 posts)Here is an article you might find helpful in understanding the email systems that the government uses.

The HANDLING CLASSIFIED INFORMATION portion really explains it well.
snip -
Media sometimes erroneously refer to Clinton as having shared classified documents. This is not something she is accused of. It is extremely difficult to share a classified document electronically over email. Most government agencies, including the State Department, maintain separate systems precisely to make it all but impossible to electronically pass information between classified and unclassified systems.
One cannot simply view a document on a classified network and email it to someone on an unclassified system even within the same agency. This is partly why Clinton and her aides say so assuredly that they did not knowingly email classified materials.
another snip -
The fact is government officials inadvertently send classified details over unclassified email systems all the time. Considering the amount of information dealt with on a daily basis, it is inevitable. Classified details are accidentally revealed in casual conversations and media interviews. We may not hear about it because its not in the interviewees interest to point that out after the fact.
A colleague and former CIA analyst tells his students he would never knowingly but almost certainly will inadvertently relate in the classroom a tidbit that is classified. The classic example is when Senator David Boren accidentally revealed the name of a clandestine CIA agent. Boren at the time was no less than chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence.

(19,908 posts)if you ask the tens of millions of voters, I will bet the overwhelming majority of them would not know Hillary sent her classified emails within a secure network. All they know about is, classified emails/Hillary Clinton/private server. That's the narrative. It may be too late to change that narrative, but someone in the Campaign needs to come up with a strategy that people can understand, that can play out beyond November because the Reps will keep hammering her on this.

(22,651 posts)I agree many people don't know or understand the difference between server use in our government.
That's why Republicans created "the email issue" because its so easy to confuse todays American 'voter'. They count on people to de-evolve into arguments on any "comments" close to the actual "truth."
