1. I'm sure that during their many years of being in similar social circles...

she has paid more attention to him than he ever really did to her. He is so ego centric, until her interests collided with his, she was just another rich and famous dude's wife who happened to get a little more press than the others. I doubt he would EVER credit her with any of her accomplishments. His whole life is an exercise in nepotism - received and given.

On the other hand, Hillary strikes me as the kind of person who studies people. Sums them up. Takes their measure. And suffers fools lightly. Her personality type is far more equipped to deal with and deflect his attacks than he will ever be to deflect hers. He is ego driven. She is results driven.

that keeps him astonishingly childlike and ignorant. Plus, he is not particularly intelligent.

She started out smart and directed from the beginning and over decades of achievement and self development has become an outstandingly knowledgeable, competent and redoubtable person.

As for their "similar" social circles, it seems to me they're actually very dissimilar, mostly just intersecting on guest lists now and then.

NY rejected Donald and, though he is surrounded by sycophants, he doesn't belong to any elite social circle. He is an outsider to politics and thus political circles and doesn't give to charity (the main big reason NY society shuns him). People associate with him because of his money.

Hillary's circles are strongly government/politics and charitable action/fundraising related, which take her all over the place. People in many circles associate with her because of her influence and political and charitable activism, and of course because the name "Clinton" now makes these two tremendous overachievers from the working and middle classes trophies on guest lists.

7. Admittedly, I don't know much about any social circle, but they showed up at the same events

So I guess that's what I mean. To me a social circle has nothing to do with friendship - it's more of a financial caste system. Money is the only common denominator. If you are in the 'social register' you are in the circle.

And that sort of social circle isn't regional.

But, you could very well have a much better understanding than this little mid-westerner.

about him. Big expert.

I see what you mean, but we need another term to describe working interactions of of what have become elite masses. Social dynamics don't change much with money. Social circles are groups defined by who belong and who do not, even the more peripheral members in the outer rings, and friendship and commonality of interest both are big parts of it. Outsiders get invited to larger fundraisers and other events, but they don't belong.

Their very different paths may cross at big gatherings, but Hillary and Donald would no more share a social circle at any stage of their lives than they'd have sat at the same table in high school. And that shocking idea was what I was reacting to.

I guess that people get thrown together, and if there is a photographer handy - voila! Friendship!! (Maybe it was a good thing that nobody was handy with a camera when I got a kiss on the cheek from Al Gore!)

As I recall, now, didn't he invite them to his 3rd wedding (or was it the 2nd) but they did NOT invite him to Chelsea's wedding, and that really pissed him off.

No matter what her status, now, I can certainly identify with Hillary's background and I am pretty sure she would easily identify with mine. Brought up by working class parents who instilled in us morals and ethics.

to the idea of them described as being in the same social circles. Her enemies love to pretend she's close buddies with everyone she's photographed with.

Yes, for the morals and ethics. She's seemingly still the good Methodist she was brought up to be (something I'm not thrilled with), though I guess her father was pretty difficult to live with. Nevertheless, I liked her describing in one appearance how her father would hand stencil fabrics for draperies. I had imagined that employees might do all that, but he was right in there.
