An Australian Went to a Trump Rally and Here’s What Happened

I made my way to the stage where Trump would be speaking, currently occupied by a speaker who told us she was a “LEGAL immigrant” – the crowd applauded. She was giving a graphic personal account of how her son was murdered by an “ILLEGAL immigrant” – the crowd booed. Several other speakers followed, relaying similarly descriptive and emotive narratives about murdered family members, and how with Trump’s immigration policies, these could have been avoided.

I pushed closer to the front.

The stage was now graced by Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio – “America’s Toughest Sheriff”. Arpaio has been accused of abuse of power, misuse of funds, failure to investigate sex crimes, unlawful enforcement of immigration laws and election law violations, amongst other crimes. He constructed Tent City – a jail made up of tents in the desert – so that inmates, largely illegal immigrants, would suffer extreme heat. In May 2009, a woman died of heat exposure after Arpaio’s sheriff’s department locked her in a cage for four hours in the sun.

The crowd cheered wildly.

“WE LOVE YOU SHERIFF JOE!” shouted a man standing near me. An Asian woman standing beside me waved her “Make America Great Again” banner like her life depended on it.

At each following mention of Hillary, the crowd booed madly. Every now and then a chant of “LOCK HER UP, LOCK HER UP, LOCK HER UP!” would break out. An older gentleman in the middle of the crowd waved a life-sized, decapitated Hillary-head-mask on a stick. Its eyes and fangs (yes, fangs) were coloured in red, and ‘EVIL’ was scrawled across its forehead. At each following mention of Hillary, the crowd booed madly. The next time we're doing nuclear testing, lets use one of these rallies.

6. I'm appalled. I've travelled to Australia and the people are wonderful. True story: I was standing

on a corner in downtown Sidney.
On my own, I was on a solo walking tour of the city, wandering around, taking in the sights.
Paused on the corner getting my bearings and a middle aged woman came up to me and asked directions to a place I did not know.
ME "I'm sorry ma'am, I have no idea where that is."
HER "Oh! You're a Yank! Are you enjoying Sidney?"
ME "Yes, I am. It's only my second day here but it's beautiful."
HER "Only your second day, well you wouldn't know how to get anywhere yet would you?"
She was wonderful. We chatted for a few minutes with her giving me tips of places to go that locals patronize.
She wound up up inviting me home to dinner to meet her family and grown up daughter. #matchmaker ( I declined but in the month I was there wound up eating at the houses of several people I met while traveling around.)
They are the nicest people in the world and it's the only place I'd move to outside this country at the drop of a hat if given the chance.
That this person got this view of our country at that rally is embarrassing as hell.

8. Hillary should use soundbites and words from these rallies in her next debate with Trump.

I'm visiting an old friend here in Phoenix, Arizona, from my home in Portland, Oregon, and I see reelection signs for Joe Arpaio. I certainly cannot deface them, etc., but Joe Arpaio is truly a terrible person.

But I really think that the words and attitudes of Trump at these rallies would turnoff so many people. I think that the viewers of television just have not been exposed to the terrible thoughts, ideas, words that Trump uses regularly. They've been sanitized by the press, who do not include these things regularly.

I think that playing clips of Trump's rallies would convince a heck of a lot of people that he is vitriolic, thoughtless, without empathy, and just plain evil. I sure would encourage Hillary supporters to play highlights (or the "lowlights&quot of what Trump says off-camera, to his rabid followers.

His regular stuff is not the calm and smooth verbiage that he can sometimes come up with on camera.

Let's see the words that allow him to sell himself to 40% of the American people!

I would not try that again In 2016 after witnessing the 2008 version of deplorable. I really do not think we know how low they are going at the Trump rallies they are obviously dangerous. Maybe the networks need to interview the Trump crowds for our education.
