2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumA strange thing happened today
My wife and I went to visit my mother and father-in-law, the occasion being my wife's birthday. In the car on way over my wife an I were talking about the latest Trump follies. She warned me not to bring up politics during our visit. No problem, that wasn't going to happen. My mother-in-law is rather liberal, as is my wife, but 87 year old father-in-law is an old school Southern super conservative who hasn't voted for a Democrat in the last 20 years. He's a great guy, but given my rather liberal views, political discussions never go well with him and I have long since learned not to go there. My father-in-law hasn't been well lately and doesn't get out much, but I have heard he he has been watching the Presidential election with keen interest. While my wife and her mother were having one their mother/daughter chats in another room, he and I were watching the Discovery channel on TV and chatting about whatever on the side.
Out of the blue he said that he was looking forward to the next debate in a few days. Leery, I asked he meant the Vice Presidential debate. "Yes", he said, and then he went on to say that he thought it would be a good match up. Dipping one toe into the water I knew was full of man eating sharks, I tentatively asked, "Did you watch the first debate?" "Yes", he said, "I watched every bit of it". Then he continued rather emphatically, "That guy is a nut!" . . . . Whoa! Did I hear that right?

(415 posts)wasn't going to happen because I "over estimate the political intelligence of the average American voter".
Is your interaction with your father-in-law causing you to reconsider?
Note: My 89 year old arch-conservative, Fox watching dad isn't saying who he is voting for yet.

(5,648 posts)One of the reasons is that I don't believe that the Obama coalition is totally intact. Women are definitely on board, including a fair number of suburban women. I think that the black community will support Hillary, but they can't possibly be as enthusiastic as they were to elect the first black President. Hopefully the Clinton campaign's GOTV effort will get most of them to the polls. However, I don't believe the young people are fully on board. They sure are not as as enthusiastic as they were for Obama. And since Hillary isn't very well liked, third party candidates are going to be a factor this time around. I can certainly see a win in the cards, but a landslide, ....I am definitely not sure of that.
I am working on a piece on Hillary and the millennial vote which I hope to post in the next day or so. That in my mind is the mostly missing piece of the puzzle.

(5,648 posts)Most older Republicans in the South cherish their values and they hate braggers. And they certainly don't like people that lie to them on a regular basis. And remember that most Southern conservatives used to be Democrats before they switched over their allegiance to the GOP so they aren't that loyal to the GOP.

(12,210 posts)It's no exaggeration to say that as each day passes, Trump looks worse and worse as a viable candidate for President.
But if Pence can look good against Kaine, the Tea Baggers still have something they can hang their bags onthe media too! But then the media always comes off like "tea baggers" at election time.

(15,408 posts)The last debate and the meltdowns since (including the middle of the night twitter rage) has sobered some of them up. I don't think they are going to be easy on Pence. Oh, please, just let me have my fantasy for another 24 hours.

(9,257 posts)I have a couple friends for whom abortion is the ONLY issue (it's something I'm careful to never discuss with them). They vote Republican no matter what...until now. Surprised and delighted to see some FB comments calling Trump a "dangerous blowhard" among other things, especially since the debate.
