The mind-blowing scale of Trump’s billion-dollar loss in one tweet

by Matthew Yglesias @mattyglesias matt@vox.com Oct 3, 2016, 10:07am

When stories deal with big numbers, it’s sometimes hard to really get a perspective on what they mean. To that end, this little calculation from Alan Cole of the Tax Foundation really helps you understand the mind-blowing scale of Donald Trump’s loss reported on his 1995 income taxes:

Alan Cole
@AlanMCole

All Net Operating Losses in 1995: $49.331 billion.
NOL taken by @realDonaldTrump in 1995: $916 million.
Trump was 1.9% of the US total.

There were 266 million Americans alive in 1995, so for a single person to represent 1.9 percent of this form of business losses is fairly extraordinary.

over estimating write offs and overestimating other claims for depreciations.

Shameful lies all round no doubt.

If only the IRS was vigilant enough.

Maybe he is the all time champion loser. That would be a great title for him.

The IRS doesn't disclose tax returns, not even to people who really really want to see them, not even to people who want to see them for a noble public purpose rather than for mere curiosity.
