Trump threatens to sue over attack ad

Henderson, Nevada (CNN)Donald Trump on Wednesday threatened to sue over a "nasty commercial" he said depicted him as unsupportive of military veterans.
"I saw today -- I left the room and I saw a commercial where it was really a nasty commercial, totally made up about me with vets. There is nobody that loves the vets more or respects the vets more," Trump said. "They're spending hundreds of millions of dollars on false commercials and it's a disgrace. So what we'll do -- I guess we'll sue them. Let's sue them. Right? Let's sue them."

Trump did not specify which ad he was referring to or which group ran the ad. His campaign did not respond to requests for details.

Go ahead, Donald, and sue. Donald ain't gonna win because the Clinton camp has every right to tell the truth by using his own words against him.
BTW, what the hell makes him think he's entitled to kid-glove treatment?!

If we are talking about the session recently where he expressed concerns about PTSD. I haven't seen the Clinton campaign misquoting him or even referring to that speech. But others in the media have twisted that into something completely different than what he said. We really don't need to do this. Trump says enough truly horrible things. We don't need to make up things.

I ass-umed it would be about not paying taxes (doesn't support the troops) and his specious claims about donating to veterans charity.

Of course we'll never know what the commercial is about, because Trump campaign won't tell us.

"Trump did not specify which ad he was referring to or which group ran the ad. His campaign did not respond to requests for details."

For all I know he could have fabricated it.

So far, the only negative ads I've seen against Trump have been ones showing what he has said at rallies, the debate, or in interviews.

Words matter Donald. When you say some soldiers aren't strong enough to endure the rigors of war you are dismissing PTSD. When you say women who have abortions should be punished then you can't say you've been misinterpreted and really didn't mean that. When you say anything as President the words are examined and parsed and discussed to determine exactly what has been said.

Politics is a nasty game. Look at the shit you threw at Lyin' Ted and the other GOP challengers. This looks like a case of someone who can dish it out but can't take it.

A plurality of the Supreme Court held in in U.S. v. Alvarez, 132 S. Ct. 2537 (2012) that factually false political speech is protected by the First Amendment. https://origin-www.bloomberglaw.com/public/desktop/document/United_States_v_Alvarez_No_11210_2012_BL_160939_US_June_28_2012_C?1475795967; http://www.scotusblog.com/case-files/cases/united-states-v-alvarez/.

Alito, joined in a dissent by Scalia and Thomas, indicated that he would have held that the right to free speech does not protect false factual statements made in a political context that inflict real harm and serve no legitimate interest. This is one of the few times I agreed with Alito, Scalia or Thomas.

The country has a long history of political cartoons which would make any of those organizations blush. The First Amendment is worthless if it doesn't protect unpopular speech.

I think Trump is a whiner when he complains about Clinton's "nasty" ads, which are nothing but excerpts from his speeches and interviews. A lot of the other ads are from PACs.

If I hear "Benghazi" one more time I'm going to scream!

Thanks for the additional information, BTW. I'm kind of surprised the decision wasn't unanimous in favor of the First Amendment re: political speech. "False factual statements" is a pretty vague standard to hold political speech to. Every politician seems to have their own version of the facts.

Have you YET figured out that it's much harder for politicians to sue people for defamation?!

The Clintons could have otherwise made a comfortable living from defamation suits alone!

...but Trump has used lawsuits or threats of them to cow bad press for decades.

But those rarely take place out in public view. If he actually tries it in this situation he'll be showing everyone -- in 4-story IMAX -- that Mr. Tough-Talk can't take the heat. Any heat at all. Like so much ice cream (or orange sherbert).

His fan club won't care, but it might shift some "I'm just voting for the candidate my party chose" types to vote non-Trump (or even for Hillary, since they can deny it later).

Every vote that keeps that howler monkey from getting control of the Executive branch of the US government is fine with me. I may prefer more, but I'll take that much.

His MO is to get (most of) his way because his opponent can't bear the cost of the lawsuits. Might not work so well with national organizations.
