when he avoided a debate (to avoid Megyn Kelly) ahead of the Iowa caucuses he lost, and was viewed to be weak.

If he did somehow try to back out now, he would be crushed by the media (whose tolerance for him is all about his ability to drive ratings/revenue), team H, and even his own base.
