In retrospect, Tim Kaine’s debate was a masterful lesson in campaign strategy

In retrospect, Tim Kaine’s debate was a masterful lesson in campaign strategy

For most of the US vice presidential debate, the collective Twittersphere concluded that senator Tim Kaine had made a bad miscalculation. He was not just annoying and overaggressive in interrupting governor Mike Pence; he was plain rude. But, as the dust has settled, it is even more evident that Kaine, and the Hillary Clinton campaign as a whole, is simply operating at different strategic level than the rest of us.

How many people do you think saw the debate? Right now, estimates say approximately 36 million people, which, while significant, is a major drop off from the 51 million that watched in 2012, and the lowest since 2000. The vast majority of voters did not watch the debate; their only exposure is the post-debate spin.

Let’s be clear: Pence won the debate. While vapid and wholly without any policy details, he was calm and presidential to Kaine’s frenetic and unpolished demeanor. He simply looked the part. But his victory is pyrrhic, because Kaine’s strategy and execution will win the election.

Kaine’s goal was simple: get as many of Donald Trump’s quotes on the record as possible, and force Pence to either defend them, or abandon them. Either situation here was a win/win. ..........

GOP candidates are stuck. Can't win by supporting Trump, can't win by renouncing him.

Aside from the headlines being filled with the fact checking that backed Tim up there was the set for tonight.

Hillary : your own running mate can't/won't defend you

Hillary : you need to apologize --- this was last week. It appears now all sides of the Repub party (including Teabaggers) are demanding a full unqualified apology from Trump tonight or all support gets pulled and they run away as far as the get in a month.

4. I expect Trump to go full-on toxic tonight... it's who he is

but it's also the only chance he has...

Quite small, but he would have to depress the turnout so much that the deplorables win...

I hope Clinton has prepared a walk-out strategy. She may have to deploy it.

7. Pence was on the ropes and flustered by the end of the debate, Kaine was winning big

just before the concluding remarks. It was like the bell ringing the end of the last round as Pence was about to collapse to the mat. Pence had just stated Trump sometimes says things he doesn't mean and lacked polish, plus the "Mexican Thing" gaffe. I don't get how some people say Pence won the debate. They have a very different scoring method I suppose, based on things like sitting up straight instead of substance and intellect.

6. I think a big part of it was wanting to tweak Trump

IF it were the Rs doing it to a D, the Rs would be crowing and the media gushing about how they were getting into his head the way they have.

9. They knew Trump was going to be live tweeting, plus Trump had interrupted Hillary 50+ times.

Some of it was payback for interrupting Hillary, I suspect. Trump fell for it and tweeted about the interruptions. Some of it was to rattle Pence, and it really did even if he tried not to allow it to show. But mostly, it was to not allow lies to slip past. You cannot wait to call out a lie, you have to interject "lie" right then and there, or the lie becomes a soundbite in an ad. Kaine effectively removed a ton of ad material from possible usage with his interjections to counter false talking points.
