2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumFor the women of DU. Kick please.
We are one Woman.
A Presidential candidate said we are pu**ys that they could grab at will. It hurt many of us deeply. Not kidding, deep scars. His comments matter.
We are so much more than that.
VOTE 2016. Your life depends on it.

(20,219 posts)WANGARI MAATHAI http://nobelwomensinitiative.org/laureate/wangari-maathai/
Wangari Maathai was the founder of The Green Belt Movement in Kenya, a grassroots movement that aimed to combat the deforestation that threatened the livelihood of communities by encouraging women to plant trees. The movement which became a tool to fight for womens rights and democracy has spread to other African countries and resulted in the planting of millions of trees. In 2004, she won the Nobel Peace for her contribution to peace and sustainable development. She passed away in 2011.
.....
Dr. Wangari Muta Maathai was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2004 for her actions to promote sustainable development, democracy and peace and was the first African woman to receive the Nobel Peace Prize. She passed away in September of 2011.
.....
The first woman in East and Central Africa to earn a doctorate degree....
In 1976 she introduced the idea of community-based tree planting. She continued to develop this idea into a broad-based grassroots organization whose main focus is poverty reduction and environmental conservation through tree planting. The organization eventually became known as the Green Belt Movement (GBM), and to-date has assisted women in planting more than 40 million trees on community lands including farms, schools and church compounds.
.....
Her campaign against land grabbing (illegal appropriation of public lands by developers) and the rapacious re-allocation of forest land received much attention in Kenya and the region.
....
She authored four books; an autobiography, Unbowed, and an explanation of her organizational method, The Green Belt Movement: Sharing the Approach and the Experience. The Challenge for Africa and Replenishing the Earth were both released in 2010.
"Its the little things citizens do. Thats what will make the difference. My little thing is planting trees."

(6,926 posts)great additions in the comments. How any woman can support Trump baffles me. I never expected to agree with Barbara Bush on much, but this is one.
I am a lifelong Democrat. I was raised by a mother who was a Democrat, she raised three children after our father died, taught school and taught me many great lessons. One of those lessons, was always to VOTE.

(4,558 posts)And love your message Sheshe.
I'm absolutely terrified, and can't even imagine what the fuck 2020, or 2024 will bring from the GOP.
Really! In 2000, I was dumbfounded that they selected someone like Bush. The man had no couth, and continually seemed to say really dumb things.. yet was elected.. twice (well elected once, and stole an election once).
Then.. 2008... Sarah Palin. I'd thought... "could the GOP possibly go any lower, or get any more ridiculous in who they want on their Presidential ticket??"
Now.. Palin really doesn't look all THAT bad when you hold her up to the orange orangutan..
Every time I think "they can't possibly get any worse".. they come along and prove me totally wrong.
They'd probably nominate Tim Mcveigh if he wasn't dead.
Maybe Jerry Sandusky??

(9,760 posts)much less put up with his actual predatory behavior!
P.S. You weren't in a locker room, Donald, you were in a work place! So, call it what it is, not locker room talk, but sexual harassment! Many will testify that the Apprentice set was a #HostileWorkEnvironment That's just how you roll, right?
Harassment is a form of employment discrimination that violates Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act of 1967, (ADEA), and the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990, (ADA).
Harassment is unwelcome conduct that is based on race, color, religion, sex (including pregnancy), national origin, age (40 or older), disability or genetic information. Harassment becomes unlawful where 1) enduring the offensive conduct becomes a condition of continued employment, or 2) the conduct is severe or pervasive enough to create a work environment that a reasonable person would consider intimidating, hostile, or abusive.
Offensive conduct may include, but is not limited to, offensive jokes, slurs, epithets or name calling, physical assaults or threats, intimidation, ridicule or mockery, insults or put-downs, offensive objects or pictures, and interference with work performance.

(20,998 posts)I sincerely hope this putrid tRump candidacy and campaign fully shine a light on the gender inequality that is still RAMPANT in our country.
We need an Equal Rights Amendment to the US Constitution that guarantees full and complete gender equality.
We need legislation that mandates equal pay for equal work.
We need LEGISLATION AND EDUCATION that specifically address rape culture and sexual assault.
We need to EXAMINE AND DISCARD, IF NECESSARY any and all patriarchal religious ethos that contribute to gender inequality and specifically withhold any federal tax consideration TO ANY RELIGIOUS ORGANIZATION THAT DISCRIMINATES -in any fashion- AGAINST WOMEN.
Thank you for your reply. Thank you!

(15,534 posts)because I just filled out my absentee ballot and had to take a moment to bask in the historical vote I just made! I'm only a year younger than Hillary and those of us of that generation fought tooth and nail to get the respect we earned, if not for us, but for future generations like my daughter and Hillary's daughter and my granddaughter and Hillary's granddaughter.
I'm also proud to say that my son and daughter will be voting Hillary also. My son was raised by a feminist and he is a feminist and proud of it.
We could tell stories about the way things used to be when we were young women. I know I could probably write a book because I worked as a secretary for many, many years and had to endure so many uncomfortable and demeaning situations that my daughter can't even fathom.
I will be taking off work when Hillary is inaugurated. I did the same for President Obama.
Proud to say I've voted Democratic in every presidential election since McGovern!
