2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI'm more worried about what will happen after the election than the election itself
I think that Hillary will win comfortably at the very least, but what kind of country are we going to have moving forward? There's a real, angry constituency out there, and this election will make them even angrier.
Obama got the Tea Party. What hell awaits President Hillary Clinton?

Same thing, in fact they already have framed her as illegitimate before she even got elected.

(35,432 posts)They're a real political force to be reckoned with. Sure, they may not win a national election, but they can win a state election here or there and definitely put people in congress.

(4,673 posts)there will be an outlet for all that hatred via whatever commercial hatred enterprise Trump, Bannon et al come up with.
They hated Obama, but he was so squeaky clean all they could come up with was the birther nonsense. So they stewed. But with Hillary, I expect Bengazi-type investigations ad nauseum, and impeachment hearing over some Trumped-up something.
Hillary winning is a great relief, but the next 4 years are going to be pretty depressing, esp if we don't get the House. It will be comforting having her there, but I don't expect govt to function any better with all the obstructionism, and that will keep the divide and tensions high.
If we could only get the House and show people again how govt can work.

I think the Trump campaign will have really opened some eyes.
Secondly I think being alt right is going to be very unfashionable. Even being right will feel out of place at a lot of places.
I think the end of the conservative movement is at hand.

(6,169 posts)Wouldn't it be great to move the national conversation forward, beyond these caveman, knee jerk issues the conservatives get all riled over? Human rights (workers, women, minorities, LGBT, etc.) should be a given. Environmental protections, a given, economic justice, a given, separation of church and state, a given. The things we could achieve!

(17,149 posts)That worries me; after the deluge of votes electing Hillary, when the losing nominee traditionally concedes as gracefully as they can, what will Trump say? I can picture him calling for an instant armed rebellion.
In reality, the deplorables will probably slink back to their couches and TVs and stew for four years.

(62,406 posts)I am thinking there will be some individual incidents such as vandalism to cars that have Hillary stickers or houses that have Hillary signs.
But I expect long term that there will be a huge civil war within the Republican party. They have nurtured this anger and the unrealistic world view for the purpose of gaining power and then to direct it to control society. It is now coming back to bite them.
Will the angry, unhinged contingent take control of the party and the more "moderate" (I use that term loosely) take control or will it be vice versa. Either way I expect there will at the very least an attempt by the angry group to create some vehicle to harness their hate.

RKP5637
(67,102 posts)doubt all of the crazy hatred of the crazies is just going to go away. Trump, loves them worshiping him at his feet, so he well might take a leading role to stir up as much hatred and discontent as he can, as he promotes himself as master of the universe.

(15,220 posts)Then, the Trump supporters need to be told to sit down and shut up by the rest of us.
They talk about wanting to "Make America Great Again" - well then let them take the first step by showing some humility and cooperation when Hillary takes office.

hamsterjill
(15,220 posts)was rigged. There's no avoiding that.
The only issue will be how their "revolution" gets handled. It's time to make those in the minority realize that they are in the minority. Perhaps we need a little "revolution" of our own.
I'm only advocating that which is legal and just. We need to get Hillary elected, take back the Senate and take back the House. Then we need to make sure that every Democrat in existence gets to the polls in the mid-terms and keep those majorities.
