2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumPolling & unsolicited calls at home
Do any of you answer an unknown number? I got a personal record of 9 such calls yesterday, both cell and landline.
I put everything on call block and then run the numbers through Google. No legitimate links. Some are junk calls documented on 800notes.com.
Assuming most are politically related, and I resent the intrusion on my privacy. So who answers, and how valid are their polling samples?

(135,425 posts)I hate the fact that Do Not Call is meaningless, as much as I hate usurious ATM fees!

(10,419 posts)how many of them are "likely voters" who answer their phone? How does that weight in a random profile?

(135,425 posts)So likely that I drag people by the dozens to the polls on election day.
But I never, ever, EVER answer the phone if I don't recognize the number! You'd think they might stop calling, all the political calls, AND all the "Buy solar panels" and all the scam calls I get! Thank goodness for 800 Notes--I plug the number in there and find out which numbers are scammers or what!

(4,462 posts)Call Dems-Remind people to register, to vote, make sure they know polling location, offer rides....maybe I'm calling you!
Lots of people don't answer, but some do, and some need help.
It's part of GOTV, hope you understand.
If we make contact once, I'm told, we do not call again.
to hear that some of your calls connect with people who need your help. I block all polling calls and political calls after one answer. I told our local dem phone banker that I will not vote for any candidate who robo calls me.
A few years ago I read about a study that found the most effective way to get out the vote was to send unlikely voters a form letter saying you last voted in ----- ( year) , and we'd love to see you vote again. Do you need help getting to the polls? Call this number.

(42,269 posts)If it's some Republican, I hang up. If it's the Dems, I say 'you got my vote at 'hello'' and wish them a good day. If it's a poll, I answer; however, if it's a push-poll with weighted questions, I either lie or hang up.
I was actually one of those people who agreed to let them call me back at 10:30 Sunday to say 'Hell, yes, Hillary won the debate!" which was pretty satisfying.

(34,131 posts)I never know if it might be related to my aged mother or my aged mother in law, both of who are likely to end up in hospital and I might get a call from a caregiver whose number I don't know.
In addition, I can no longer read the numbers on the caller ID without my glasses and often need to grab the phone before I can find them.
I do the same thing - I run numbers through Google and any solicitation calls get reported to the Do Not Call list. Most of those are scammer calls - legitimate businesses generally respect the Do Not Call list.
If I didn't answer unknown numbers, I would not have been able to skew the Rasmusssen poll slightly more towards Hillary Clinton the other day. I would not have bee able to harass the fake Microsoft techs and lie to them about what kind of computer I have or what I was doing while I pretended to follow their instructions.
And I wouldn't have had a wonderful conversation last night with a lovely British woman who was calling for VictoryforHillary.com.
