Conservative Figures Out that Libs Were Right All Along: The Alt-Right Is Scary

Back in June of this year, alleged Republican "kingmaker" Bill Kristol (the man responsible for inflicting Sarah Palin on the national dialog) was horrified at Donald Trump's march to the Republican nomination and toyed with launching an independent run to challenge Trump as the head of the party he's been manipulating behind the scenes for decades. His candidate of choice? David French, a senior fellow with the National Review and an Iraq War vet. The Trump campaign took very little time to try to intimidate him out of such a run and within a few days, French bowed out.

But Trump's alt-right minions weren't satisfied with just eliminating the potential rival candidacy. French needed to be punished for daring to consider the possibility at all and continuing to be a vocal #NeverTrump proponent. The harassment he received is not at all unfamiliar to those of us on the left who have come across these alt-righters on social media:

For years, the elite conservatives, as embodied by the staff of National Review, have been perfectly willing to ride the horse that is the racist, homophobic, misogynist right so long as they vote for the conservative economic agenda.

And now they have lost control of those lunatics. I don't wish the kind of bullshit they spew on the families of children of anyone, but for fuck's sake, they enabled these assholes. It's hard to feel sorry for snake handler cultists when they ge tbit too. They knew what the fuck they were doing.

Back in the 50s and 60s Buckley and the NR set fought against the Birchers to be the face of conservatism, but they had to do it in such a way as to not alienate Bircher voters. The Birchers' Conspiracy-mongering and open anti-semitism would relegate the conservative movement to a clownish fringe, but they needed the numbers.

The Buckleyites pulled it off, sidelining the Bircher leaders while still supporting candidates that would also get votes from Birch members and fellow-travelers.

50-60 years later, the shoe is on the other foot. The finest, high-class other foot you can imagine. It's terrific, believe me!

...an intentional infection.

It's like they had an open wound, packed dirt into it and rinsed it with sewage and then get all surprised that the infection is eating their arm.
