2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumHow about an "I voted early" thread by location?
We could just type in the state and county in the subject line and then use the message text box to add any details?
I would be interested in hearing from across the country. .
Edited to clarify subject line.

New location. Mixed group of voters. All shapes, sizes, colors, genders, and ages.
Don't know how this compares to previous elections as they appear to have consolidated early voting locations.
I was asked to provide a photo ID.
I didn't bother to challenge the call.

(2,145 posts)the first woman President of the US in South Dakota. Very busy place....more than 20 people voted in the 15-20 minutes we were there. We had tried to vote Tuesday but could not find a parking place in 2 blocks. Since my brother is disabled, we had to go back another day.

I voted the straight D ticket, a bit nervous because our lead-loving R governor tried to eliminate straight party voting. The courts blocked him, he's still fighting it but the ballots still have it. I HOPE it is still valid ....
Washtenaw Cty, with Ann Arbor voted 88% for President Obama... the label "Republican" is so detested that city elections no longer have anyone running as a "Republican".
Gonna turn out big for Hillary; I think the "Natural Law Party" candidate may draw more votes than Trump.

(28,337 posts)Where - are you sitting down for this? - one recent poll actually has Hillary up by 3!
Disclaimer: I will not be shocked if/when MT goes for Trump. I won't be locking myself in the bedroom for a week-long cry or anything. One poll is just that, one poll - but it did get a B rating from Nate Silver. So there is room for hope, no matter how faint it may be.
More importantly, that any recent poll would give Hillary a lead - in MONTANA - says a lot!

(10,132 posts)It seems to be a county option - we always had to add postage in the past. And the ballot was 5 pages long, multiple columns for the various offices.
The county registrar's site finally shows that it's been received and counted* - it's taking them a long time to update their site, since they say it was received on the 22nd and the update didn't show until this morning.
*I suspect counted in this case means that they verified the signature and tossed it into the "valid" pile - I don't think the ballots aren't actually tallied until election day itself.

(5,810 posts)In Florida you can request an absentee ballot be mailed to your registered address with NO reason specified. You can do this in person, on line and by phone (I think). As long as you make the request by the deadline (to allow time for mailing) you will get a paper ballot that you can fill out while sitting at home...no stress, no hurry, time to double check your ballot for accuracy and follow return instructions. My husband and I even have a standing order to send us absentee ballots through 2018. We can renew when that runs out. We can also track our ballots after they are mailed back to the Supervisor of Elections, which I did (on line) and verified they were received.
Wahoo for mail in voting! Easy peasy....no lines, no waiting!
PS. Add two more votes for Hillary and Patrick Murphy.

(3,275 posts)That is two more votes for Clinton. I'm not sure which day they voted. They said that there were only a few other people there. Vermont is a very blue state but my parents have been campaigning for Clinton since the beginning. They usually works at the voting places on election day.
I live in another state where you can't vote early unless you have a valid reason so I will vote on election day in the morning before I go to work.

(14,565 posts)I intentionally picked the busiest site in the county, the related website indicating a 45 minute wait. I wanted to get a feel for tension and animosity in line, referenced by a front page article in the Miami Herald today. By the time I headed there it was down to 15 minutes. That seemed like enough of a sample.
The parking lot was jammed. I had to loop twice, along with many other cars. The pamphlet distributors for various campaigns were surprisingly aggressive. They were approaching our cars before we found a spot. Then they rushed after us as soon as we opened the door. I'd say there were at least 35 people handing out those flyers. When I waved a woman off, showing her my sample ballot and saying I had all the information I needed, she was unhappy and instantly sarcastic, telling me to, "Have a good day, sir," in both English and Spanish. Emphasis on SIR.
Sigh. There was no line outside. Inside I had perhaps a 2 minute silent wait. Everything went smoothly, other than one woman who handed me my ballot and tried to direct my next steps, but she spoke virtually zero English.
I appreciate that they allowed as much time as needed in the privacy booths. When I voted in Nevada there were often workers lingering nearby so there was more of an impression to keep it moving, even though it wasn't stated.
The ballot is two pages, front and back of each. That doesn't seem ideal, as opposed to front only. They did have a sign on entry indicating to check both sides of the page, and a polling place worker was also saying that loudly to us as we entered the building. The second page is primarily ballot measures and not head-to-head races.
It was busy but not as crowded as the parking lot suggested. More than half the privacy booths were empty as I departed. The woman who helped me scan the pages said it was packed an hour earlier, that I picked a good time.
In filling out the ovals I found it easier to outline them once or twice before filling in the outline.
I nearly forgot to mention that I wore blue head to toe, including a visor.

(16,376 posts)Son and I made mistakes on our ballots! I accidentally signed his envelope and he accidentally signed mine. I called the Boulder County Election Commission and they told me to just draw a line through my son's signature and sign my own name on top of it with an initial. Son to do the same. It was bound to happen. We were both doing research on what judges to retain and passing our ballots back and forth to double-check. I will NEVER do that again. Now I have to get son's ballot back to him at college in WI and have him mail it from there. Eye-yigh-yigh. (He was home on a weeks' break at the time AND first time voter.)

the line was enormous and I am fighting a cold and have bad knees. I usually go on the second day of early voting which is today and I could barely get into the parking lot. Usually the second day it starts to wind down and there is no wait. The guy at the door said they had about 2500 people vote at that location and about the same amount today.
Harris County allows people to early vote anywhere in the county but on polling day you have to go to your home precinct if you vote on election day. It is at the Trini Mendenhall Sosa Community Center which is located in an area that I would call mixed white/hispanic, immigrant/native born area so it's hard to say if it is Democrat or Republican. Texas State Rep is a Democrat but the US Rep (Ted Poe) is a Republican but that doesn't mean much in Texas because it is so gerrymandered here that the district runs from the Woodlands in NE Harris County and then cuts a swath threw Cypress before going through Spring Branch.
I'll try again tomorrow. I heard on Houston Public Radio that the turnout is up from 47,000 approx. to 67,000 for the the first day.
Update: Went today and the lines are just as long and the lines were moving fast but it still took 25 minutes to vote. They had 48 voting machines.
It was difficult to tell who people were voting for. The crowd was older (possibly because it was during work hours) but diverse. I only saw 1 bumper sticker and it said "Harris Democrat", so I hope that's a good sign.

(137 posts)Went to early vote this morning about 11:15 AM. Early voting is taking place in a library near my house. No line but it was pretty busy inside where the voting was taking place. Had to show picture ID. It was very smooth and easy and it only took a few minutes. Voted straight D ticket all the way down.
Glad that's over!
