2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forum1982 RNC CONSENT DECREE against voter suppression. If Trumpettes violate it, the Decree will
be extended another EIGHT years (while it's due to sunset in December 2017).
The RNC has tried to get rid of it back in 2009, but a Federal Judge in New Jersey, Judge Dickinson R. Debevoise, didn't find any evidence that Republicans have learned their lesson, and kept the Decree in place.
Republican observers at polling places:
1. May not question voters about their credentials
2. May not impede or delay voters by asking for identification
3. May not videotape, photograph, or otherwise make visual records of voters or their vehicles
4. May not handout any literature outlining the fact that voter fraud is a crime or detailing the penalties under any state or federal statute for impermissibly casting a ballot
Rachel Maddow covered this over a period of two days. I never knew anything like this existed, but it goes to show that the DNC had to SUE the RNC for voter suppression violations in the early 1980's, and if Trump successfully riles up his Trumpsters to engage in this ant-democratic behavior at the polls, the Consent Decree imposed on Republicans will be extended another EIGHT YEARS.
Obviously, the RNC are terrified that will happen.
Trumpsters - who are as ignorant about this legal rule as I was - might engage in voter suppression tactics because Don-the-Con has been telling them to. If that happens, the Decree will be extended another 8 years.

(3,847 posts)but, but the rethugs have done all of that ever single election and pushed for stricter voting laws and have created voter supression nationwide.
I don't get it. And how did the Supreme Court over ride this decree.

(783 posts)What was overridden was a provision of the voting rights act that originally decreed states (mostly deep south states) that had historically engaged in suppressive tactics (poll taxes and the like) had to get permission from the feds if they wanted to change their laws. So, that being overridden, they can now change their laws, which (no surprise) they've been doing.
This consent decree is a totally different thing.

(297,029 posts)I saw Rachel's report on this earlier and was mesmerized and fascinated!
How stupid is drumpf to send his flunkies out to break the law and throw another Consent Decree on the gop that will pile on 8 more years after Dec 1, 2017!
Shown on Rachel's show..

We need to spread this widely, via all our social media, so that others can be aware that Don-the-Con's attempt to suppress the votes in largely PoC communities and districts is illegal and it will extend the Decree another 8 years!

I was surprised that neither President Obama nor Hillary Clinton spoke of this, but I'm assuming here that they hope Trumpsters will violate the Decree so that they can extend it another eight years.

(11,623 posts)I can't see these scared rednecks actually loading up the truck and going to minority majority districts to intimidate voters. I'm guessing it sounds like a great idea at the Trump klan rallies but on November 8th they'll all have something better to do that day.

(5,969 posts)It's rather frightening that these rules will run out soon. They sound sensible and necessary to me (especially the first 3 rules). Members of the parties should not question any voters at all or make it in any way harder for them to vote. If credentials need to be checked, it should be the job of election officials at the polling places and not some Trump goons who pick out their victims by skin colour.

(33,104 posts)How is that a threat if nobody has even heard of this decree until now? What about something with some real teeth like reviving the Civil Rights Act that the Republicans have been steadily diluting since it was passed in 1964.
