2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumMecklenburg Cty. Dems need emergency funding ASAP. National focus on NC has them stretched to limit
and they are running on empty. Their GOTV is crucial for this state because that is the Charlotte area where the most Dem votes are located.
This is exactly why GOP here did what they did by reducing early voting sites in Meck County from 22 to 10. The lines are 3-4 hours long, the needs are constant, and Meck Dems are even trying to provide water for those in line.
They are also handing out Blue Ballots to every Dem voter to inform them of judges and other Dem candidates down ballot. GOP took away Straight ticket voting this year, so many voters will be finding out the hard way if they don't have that Blue Ballot.

If you have any funds to donate, please do ASAP. If you've EVER done GOTV in a purple state you know how hard these Dems work.
Thank you DU.

(113,040 posts)The work is never-ending for GOTV in the last 2 months. And the HRC campaign keeps coming in and that requires accommodation, too. They know this is where the votes are. It just happens to have the local Dems stretched to the max.

(30,481 posts)It's very time consuming to figure it out without great help from others. Many of us don't give to the major party structure. We give to individual candidates. Information like this is big.

(113,040 posts)Perhaps more DUers will make that connection between the national race and our state and its county offices. It's not easy fund wise and the workload is doubled when you're the crucial state for Dems to win.

If the same people had turned out to vote in 2010 that turned out in 2008, we wouldn't have gotten this moronic Republican legislature that has done everything it can to wreck any and everything good about NC.
And don't forget the tons of Democratic voters in the Triad and the Triangle, too; in fact, it sounds like the Republican Mecklenburg BOE screwed over Charlotte MUCH worse than the Republican Guilford BOE screwed over Greensboro and High Point, we have the same number of early voting locations (starting today, later than 2012, though) that we had in 2012 and 2008.

(113,040 posts)I recently moved from Meck to Henderson County. Will work to strengthen party infrastructure here. Meck is strong structurally .they're just overwhelmed with the all the added work and costs. But, it will definitely payoff when Ross and Cooper beat Burr and McCrory.

(1,808 posts)Thank you so much for your generous contributions!
The county party has received no outside funding this year whatsoever. Unlike previous years, we are 100% staffed with volunteer labor instead of paid staff. The main reason? Republicans cut off the public financing of political parties' GOTV funds when they eliminated the "tax check-off" option for each taxpayer to contribute $3 of the year's income taxes to the political party of their choice. The state Democratic party received about $1.5 million a year, and the Republican party about $1.2 million. Our county party received $30-$50,000 in past years to help pay for things like slate cards, staffing needs, gas cards for rides to the polls, robocalls and general operating expenses. That doesn't happen now.
Despite the lack of funds, the Mecklenburg County Democratic Party in Charlotte, NC has maintained an office and welcomed the coordinated campaign with open arms. However, we are now struggling to finance the printing of our "Blue Ballot" that educates our voters as to who the Democrats are on the ballot and where to go vote. Your contributions will help finance a much-needed second printing of the Blue Ballot so that we can elect down-ticket Democrats - especially our judges!

(3,269 posts)She has dominated with North Carolina newspaper endorsements. The Times endorsement may not help much in-state, but hopefully it will raise her profile with out-of-state Democratic donors. She has fought the good fight against a brutal cascade of non-issue attack ads. And the Times is right, this is an opportunity for a huge constructive change.

The contrast between the two candidates could not be sharper. Mr. Burr is a quiet party wheel horse whose career in the House and the Senate has been supported by significant campaign donations from the fossil fuel and nuclear energy industries. He was appointed to Donald Trumps national security advisory panel, but, like many Republican incumbents, he has been hemming and hawing about Mr. Trumps demoralizing candidacy. I take him at his word, the senator said rather meekly after Mr. Trump denied that he had ever committed the sexual assaults on women that he bragged about in the Access Hollywood tape. Mr. Burr has been trying to convince voters that Hillary Clintons lack of judgment is worse than Mr. Trumps.
Mr. Burr is caught up as well in the controversy over the bathroom bill championed by Gov. Pat McCrory, whose re-election campaign is in trouble. In the face of business boycotts, the senator called for retreat from the ill-advised law that forces transgender individuals to use public bathrooms according to their birth gender and prohibits cities from passing antidiscrimination ordinances to protect gay and transgender people. Democratic and millennial voters have also been energized by the Republican state governments enactment of a sweeping voter suppression law. It was struck down in federal court as a transparent attempt to block African-American voters with almost surgical precision.
Ms. Ross showed the sort of spirit North Carolinians need in the Senate when she chose to run after better-known Democrats declined. Her agenda ranges from tighter Wall Street regulations to stronger gun controls, from a higher minimum wage to defense of the Affordable Care Act. She hasnt hesitated to criticize Mrs. Clintons handling of the email server controversy as wrong. Mr. Burr attacks Ms. Ross as an opponent of the state sex offenders registry, because in the 1990s she questioned whether it would promote vigilantism. As a state legislator, Ms. Ross supported the registry.
