by Nancy LeTourneau
The question becomes: is this a permanent break or will they return to the fold once Trump is gone? That might depend less on the current candidate and more on how party leaders have responded to him. At least some prominent Republican women are starting to speak up about that.
A growing number of prominent Republican women are worried that as members of their male-dominated party step up to defend Donald Trump against accusations of sexual assault, they are causing irreparable damage to the GOPs deteriorating relationship with female voters
If the GOP has truly convinced itself that openly engaging in sexual assault fantasies is something normal that men do among one another, I have a suggestion. Relocate the Republican National Committee headquarters into a mens-only locker room, [Amanda] Carpenter wrote. Eliminate all pretenses of wanting to let women in.
There are those who respond by saying, Surprise, surprise the GOP embraces sexism. Its hard to imagine they are shocked that the party that launched a war on women is not a place that welcomes empowered women. But being the party that condones sexual assault takes it up to a whole new level. Well have to wait and see whether or not that breech can be mended.

(5,790 posts)In fact, when the dust settles, Nikki Haley will probably come out of this looking pretty good to many Republicans. While the Trump fiasco has been playing out, she's been quietly leading hurricane recovery efforts in South Carolina.
I do think that Trump has lost them for this election cycle. From our perspective, the problem with that will be ticket splitting. Many will still vote GOP down ballot.

(1 post)Donald Trump has done women a hu-u-uge favor with the exposure of his boorish behavior. Over the last couple of years I have seen more and more women wresting their identity away from the patriarchal norms they have lived under in the past. It has been a hard, slow move forward but Trump's visibility and on record comments, along with the sterling example of HRC maintaining her cool during it all, has encouraged more and more women to say "no more" to fat shaming, "no more" to gender shaming, "no more" to power intimidation. It is exHILLARYating! (sorry, couldn't resist.)
My wife and daughter are very energized. And welcome to DU!!

(6,496 posts)Having endured two pregnancies myself, I could never imagine making laws to force women to endure a pregnancy they don't want. I can see men not understanding this, but from women it is strange. I guess they really buy into the stuff their church tells them and they also love being pregnant.

(13,305 posts)I know it's completely anecdotal, but the amount of white women I know who are voting for Trump is ridiculous. It's frightening to me. And I'm in solidly blue New Jersey so not exactly GOP country.

(32,969 posts)I hope have lost Women Of Color forever. Black college educated women should be courted and groomed by the DNC & the state parties at all levels of government. I strongly and sadly suspect that a "reasonable acceptable republican/conservative "candidate will come around and wealthier(you choose your meaning) white women will vote republican again. The head of the local logcabin republicans is a white college educated woman and has said she is still supporting Trump. That makes me very sad & a bit angry.

(9,527 posts)In 2008 they nominated Palin. In 2012 Romney with his binders full of women assisted greatly by Todd Akin and "legitimate rape" and then had a committee tell them they should appeal more to women. And in 2016 Trump.
If they actually learn, I think they can get women voters. But they have gotten worse over the last three elections.
