as a practical matter, the president can't just fire the fbi director.

in fact, i don't think the president can even legally do that, except for cause. and unless the "cause" is clear-cut, it could become politically problematic. it looks bad to fire the director of the fbi for political reasons, any firing that happens right about now would look like political payback even if there is cause.

However, the President can demand a full briefing immediately, including the reason a notification of this was sent at this time to a Republican legislator. The President can require such a briefing, a discussion, and can make his displeasure known. The President can also release details of such a briefing if he chooses.

Don't underestimate the power of the President in such matters.
