(81,210 posts)Just an attempt to justify his decision to cover his ass because of how he'd testified earlier. I still say, if HIS SUPERIOR OFFICER, Attorney General Loretta Lynch, was against this (and let him know that), then he's guilty of insubordination, and he has to be terminated. Because the question then becomes - how long before he does this again? He's following his own rules now? Instead of the determination of his superior officer? HIS BOSS says no, and he goes ahead on his own and says yes to himself and does it ANYWAY? That's insubordination. If he stays on, what does that tell the chain of command below him? That maybe some of THEM can go rogue, too, if they don't agree with their superior officer's decision? Then you have wholesale anarchy and the system collapses.
He has to go. He violated chain of command. He has to go.

(81,210 posts)He has proven that "Cover Yer Ass" is his main policy, and that's the only thing to which he's truly loyal.
He's totally compromised now and can no longer be trusted. By EITHER side, frankly. Cooler heads among the enemy would be wise to question how soon he'd turn on them, too. Comey has just proven he's in business strictly for himself. He can't be trusted. When push comes to shove, he can be counted on to look out for #1. Which, in my book, makes him a typical republi-CON, anyway.
He's no longer trustworthy. NO chief executive would want a rogue agent as a department head. Someone who couldn't be trusted. Even a President Trump would not be well-served. This guy will always look out for his own neck first. Which, I suppose, is why he did what he did here. But I think he underestimated the blowback. Probably calculated that it wouldn't be too much, and far worse if he'd waited. But now he's made so many enemies that it may not be possible to count that high. He's become a "thing." A polarizing, partisan figure. He's TOTALLY compromised, and damaged goods. SEVERELY damaged goods.
If I were President or President-Elect, I'd want him out - YESTERDAY.

(81,210 posts)But he made himself the issue here.
It's classic insubordination. When I heard, this morning, that Loretta Lynch (HIS BOSS, the Attorney General and HEAD of the Justice Department - for which the FBI works and plays a subordinate roll in the chain of command), had told him not to do this and he went ahead anyway, OVER HER DECISION, then he's guilty of insubordination. And he should either resign or get fired.
How would it be if the chain of command in the military were flouted like that? How'd that work out? In corporate America? In those crazy-ass militias around the country? Hell, we've already seen the Bundy bunch get away with it. Man - what a way to tear down the system.

(12,448 posts)Actually worth sharing, in case you're not "in the loop" like I am! (and just in case)
(I'm assuming the 4-paragraph rule doesn't apply to campaign emails)
This is all a bit confusing, and much of the reporting has been misleading or downright inaccurate, so I want to take a minute to walk through this. Bear with me!
Here's the quick backstory: In July, FBI Director James Comey concluded a year-long investigation by deciding not to go forward with any case about Hillary's emails. It wasn't even a close call, he said. In his words, "no reasonable prosecutor" would have brought charges.
Yesterday, in a surprise to us all, Comey wrote a very strange letter to Congress that was long on innuendo and short on facts. He said that in a completely separate investigation, the FBI had found some emails that may or may not be related to Hillary, and indeed may or may not be significant at all.
It's since been reported that these emails may not have even been sent by or to Hillary; that they weren't withheld by Hillary or the campaign in the earlier investigation; and most or even all of them may be duplicates of emails already in the FBI's possession.
It's being reported that Comey sent this letter over the objections of Department of Justice officials who told him that it was inconsistent with longstanding policy of both Democratic and Republican administrations not to take action that might impact an election. It's an unprecedented intrusion into a close presidential election with 10 days until Election Day.
But by being vague and obfuscating, Comey opened the door to conspiracy theories, Republican attacks against Hillary, and a surge of fundraising for Trump and his team. So this bears repeating: There is no evidence of wrongdoing, no charge of wrongdoing, and no indication that any of this even involves Hillary.
Voters deserve answers.
Comey needs to come clean with the American people about what he found and answer all the questions about why he took this unprecedented step less than two weeks before the election.
Here's what this changes for you and this campaign: Absolutely nothing.
Trump has spent more than a year trying to bully his way to the presidency. He's been browbeating the FBI (indeed, many have speculated that Comey took this extraordinary action in part to reduce the pressure on his agency that Trump's campaign and his Republican Congressional allies has been building up), leading crowds in chants of "lock her up," and even saying Hillary should be in prison -- and if he won, he'd put her there.
The facts be damned -- Trump's always shown a complete disregard for the truth. In spite of there being no new information, he's already raising money off the bizarre letter (he literally sent a text message asking for money within an hour of the story breaking!) and he's more fired up than ever on the trail today.
It closes asking for a donation, of course.

(21,056 posts)So, what the hell, is this guy just electioneering now?
I would actually continue to run the campaign as it was running before this BS occurred. Leave it to the DOJ to investigate the move & maybe have the president to slam his actions, and answer questions on TV, but have surrogates say this is exactly what Trump wants to try and get back in this, because he has no policies for the American people and has ran the lousiest and most degrading campaign in history because he simply doesn't operate in any other manner, as the Billy Bush video shows.
I mean, really, we're in the literal HOMESTRETCH of the election. His actions are highly questionable and scream, "PARTISAN!". I don't even think he realized how big it would be, and tried walking it back today. He seems quite amateurish.

(12,448 posts)Comey told Justice officials that he intended to inform lawmakers of newly discovered emails. These officials told him the departments position that we dont comment on an ongoing investigation. And we dont take steps that will be viewed as influencing an election, said one Justice official who spoke on condition of anonymity to describe the high-level conversations.
Director Comey understood our position. He heard it from Justice leadership, said the official. It was conveyed to the FBI, and Comey made an independent decision to alert the Hill. He is operating independently of the Justice Department. And he knows it.
Justice officials warned FBI that Comeys decision to update Congress was not consistent with department policy
Is there some way the DOJ can punish Comey for knowingly violating policy? This new letter actually makes it worse. I think Michael Cohen's tweet said it best:
And Comey is so concerned about NOT misleading the American people that he sent this clarifying letter ... TO FBI EMPLOYEES

(9,114 posts)for the American people to know MORE. Not less, more. She's fighting against "old hands" classifiers, saying "what I talked about is open knowledge, or should be." The faceless national security "experts", lurking in the shadows, are pushing for us to know less.
The fight over classification was one where she and her aides were saying "This shouldn't be classified. That shouldn't be classified.", in the original Comey e-mail investigation.
Here, she's telling Comey, "show America exactly what you're investigating, exactly what you've got". But he can only tell 8 repug congress committee chairs. (He doesn't remember they leak like a sieve, all the time.)
What was in the 3 header-less e-mails, that had the "c" in the body? Nothing. There's no explosive revelation that shows national security classified in any of them, or we'd see at least one story. No intel gathering method revealed, no location revealed, no asset revealed, no Plame like agency cover blown, there's nothing there. This whole thing is them yelling in the headlines "National Security. Top secret. Loose e-mails.", and there is a big blank space below the headlines, where the body of the article should be.
The bad guys know how they hit us. The non political Libyans in the area know how the bad guys hit us. All the intel and military people in the gov know how the bad guys hit us. Who is the "top secret" info not supposed to be seen by?
They're doing this to hurt the candidate that wants us to know more, and back the candidate who won't show us his taxes, won't show us his charitable foundation's donation records, won't let any info from his thousands of court cases be unsealed, won't show us his financial ties to Putin, Libya, China, won't let any former employees reveal anything about him -- they're doing this to back the candidate that wants us to know less.
