2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumJust got back from call banking into North Carolina. Spent about 3 hours. Very positive
responses. People know what is at stake. They are also going for Roy Cooper and Deborah Ross.
Will try to go back later this afternoon, but tomorrow, and everyday until the election for me.
One interesting thing was I got a small number of wrong numbers, and inquired with the folks who answered the phone if they were voting, and if they were, would they be voting for Hillary. Out of 7 wrong numbers, 5 said they would be voting straight Democratic, and 2 wouldn't tell me. I don't think that is bad for a wrong number dial
The others were Democrat all the way. 50% of my batch had already voted or were going to vote early, and the remainder would be voting on November 8
I know, not scientific, but it indicated to me that Democrats are or will be getting out to vote in North Carolina.

Is it an indicator, I don't know, but in my view it motivates the voters, not only to get out and vote, but that they are important and count

(92,131 posts)and it works very well. You are setup to an automatic dialer system, where you input your phone number into the computer, where the system calls you back, you press [Start] on the computer screen, and they make the calls and connections automatically to your phone, and you mark the appropriate responses on the computer screen, and when the call is finished, you select save/next, and they connect you automatically with the next caller.
The GOTV was for Hillary, Deborah Ross and Roy Cooper.
Anyone who can spare the time I highly recommend it

(92,131 posts)do it on the weekends, and some just for an hour at a time. Every little bit helps, including your talking to people at work. That is a form of canvassing you know

(4,007 posts)We get some wrong numbers on our list as well. Most of my calls go to ans phone but even leaving a message reminds them to vote.

(92,131 posts)I guess it is a 6 of one, half a dozen of another.
They also have it setup for us where we they display on the computer screen where their polling place is if they don't know. Also, they give us a phone number if people need to find out about transportation to the polls
All of us are going to make this happen.
You are right in the middle of it. I am calling from California, though I do identify myself a with the Hillary Campaign in North Carolina, I don't tell them where I am calling from
Good Florida!!!

(7,572 posts)The list is from the Dem. primary - so all Democrats (one or two REpubs mixed in accidentally.) Many phone numbers discontinued (prob. land lines). I'm leaving a message although we were told not to, to keep calling. The turn out in this very Republican county (one in 10 Dem) has been very high, so don't know if the R's here are voting for Trump or not. I'm guessing a lot of the women aren't. I'm very anxious and worried about this election. I've never seen such a terrible, HORRIBLE Republican candidate in my life, and cannot have any empathy for anyone voting for him for any reason.

(25,245 posts)We called primarily local donors/former volunteers (San Antonio) to get them to volunteer. They were a great group to call!!!!
In 2012, we called into Florida.

(39,343 posts)Do you get people who say they weren't going to vote HRC but are able to flip them and get them to say they'll vote for her?
How often does it work?

(10,565 posts)She was really good-she was a call center pro- I'm pretty clunky but I do my best. Women really seem to have an edge-If a husband answered the phone, a lot of times I could feel some suspicion- perhaps he didn't know she had expressed an interest in Hillary.

(92,131 posts)fact that is the first question we ask, "I understand you are a Hillary supporter", and if they say know, we say thank you and move on to the next call, unless they say they are undecided. We don't waste time trying to convince a trump supporter to vote for Hillary. Our purpose is to motivate Democrats that are supporting Hillary to vote as early as possible, and to provide the necessary information to facilitate that process.

(92,131 posts)supporters out to vote, and encouraging them to vote early if they can, and provide them where they polling place is, where they can return their ballot, and who to call if they need rides to the polls.
Yes, it does work, and that is the biggest advantage the Democrats have with the mechanism to motivate people to GOTV.
If anyone responds they are voting for trump, we just say thank you, and move to the next caller.
If anyone says they are undecided, you politely give them reasons why this election is so important, such as the Supreme Court, etc.
In my calls I have only had a few undecideds, and they have said they will consider it.
As far as a motivating factor, and to let people know they count, yes it is a game changer
I did this during the Primaries for Hillary, and it was that early voting that made the difference
It works
We are calling into the swing states, and calling Democrats
