Donald Trump’s Impeachment Threat - by the NYT Editorial Board

By THE EDITORIAL BOARD NOV. 3, 2016

Donald Trump and other embattled Republican candidates are resorting to a particularly bizarre and dangerous tactic in the closing days of the campaign — warning that they may well seek to impeach Hillary Clinton if she wins, or, short of that, tie her up with endless investigations and other delaying tactics.

Of all the arguments advanced by the Trump forces, this has to be among the most preposterous. In effect, what they’re saying is, Mrs. Clinton won’t be able to govern, because we won’t let her. So don’t waste your vote on her. Vote for us.

In a rational world — you know, one that values comity and progress in the national interest — this line of argument would be seen as incendiary at worst and hopelessly wacky at best. Not so in Trumpland, where the candidate himself warns (as he did in Miami on Wednesday) that a Clinton victory would “create an unprecedented and protracted constitutional crisis,” raising the specter that government would be severely hobbled by congressional Republicans’ open-ended investigations and a determination to impeach Mrs. Clinton. All this even if she was fairly elected by a majority of American voters. “Haven’t we just been through a lot with the Clintons?” Mr. Trump asked. “The work of government would grind to a halt if she were ever elected.”

The tactic is a rejection of the nation’s need of a functioning government and a tacit concession that Mr. Trump may be losing and that he can be saved only by more scare tactics. Other Republican candidates in tight races have picked up this theme. The G.O.P. phrase du jour is “constitutional crisis,” depicting a hog-tied executive and a Republican Congress obsessed with perpetuating their demonization of Mrs. Clinton. Senator Richard Burr, campaigning for re-election in North Carolina, took the Trump fantasy one step further, telling supporters: “Could she pardon herself? And the answer is yes.”

Rudy Giuliani, one of Mr. Trump’s most zealous acolytes, echoed this cry to carry the battle forward into a Clinton administration. “I guarantee you in one year she’ll be impeached and indicted,” Mr. Giuliani promised Iowa voters this week. “It’s just going to happen. We’re going to sort of vote for a Watergate.”

Trump campaign is full steam ahead with this meme from now until election day spending millions in ad money to smear Hillary with false innuendos. The ad I saw today highlighted Comey' FBI announcement last week.

This is the way Paul Krugman termed the very real possibility of what we now face in America.
I wonder if there's a way out of this apparently direct path to what ultimately may become the next civil war, be it violent or not.
The remarkable tone-deaf ideology of the right (or alt-right) which relies on rumors, innuendos, and grossly inaccurate speculation to shape their truly alternate reality has become beyond concerning and has morphed in this election cycle to the frightening. These people will not let it go.
The country just came through one of the most shameful periods in modern times when a twice-elected President was virtually ignored by the Capitol gangsters. The obvious undercurrent of racism has become mainstream - sure, not many actually espouse their racist views publicly, but the intent and source of their actions are clear to anyone with a brain. History will surely remember Barack Obama as a wise and decent man whose genuine love for a free country and a progressive country was effectively blunted by blind hatred and racism.
And now we move on to the first woman President - a watershed moment for our country in which everyone - pro or con - should embrace as the sure signs of a country that longs to be once-again in the forefront of progressive change and inclusion. Instead of having a reasonable debate about the direction this country is moving - even against the formidable barrier of ignorance - a significant part of our population will now turn their backs on the reality in favor of their baseless fantasy world that they are most comfortable within.
Personally, I'm done. I really don't want to live in this society anymore, even though my time is drawing to a close. What pride can we draw on as an American these days? Take a trip outside of this country and you will find people from all over the world who will cautiously engage you in conversation, hoping that the absurdity of our political process is not mentioned. I recently met Mexicans, Canadians, Australians, Spaniards, and Brits with only a small amount of Brits whom endorse the right in American (see Brexit). Virtually everyone else thinks we've basically gone crazy - and they are as scared about our choices as we on this site are. I still retain some measure of optimism bit I also know that the people who support a blatantly disingenuous demagogue without qualification will not go away and they will continue their attack on the true ideals of America in favor of their narrow pipe dream "values".
For these reasons and more, I think I can do better elsewhere.
