McCain: Republicans must stop Supreme Court from ‘tilting to the left’

By David Weigel November 4 at 1:30 AM

Speaking at a modest get-out-the-vote rally at the spring training ballpark of the Chicago Cubs, Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) revisited an idea he’d walked back last month — that a Republican majority in the Senate would be ready to fight any Hillary Clinton nominee to the Supreme Court.

“There could be as many as three Supreme Court justices that will be chosen in the next four years,” McCain said. “We have to have a Senate who will prevent that four-to-four split from tilting to the left and making decisions that will harm this nation for decades to come.”

That was all McCain said about the court, at a rally headlined by Mitt Romney and covered by MSNBC, CNN and Showtime. But it resembled a remark McCain gave to a Philadelphia radio station last month, promising that Republicans would “be united against any Supreme Court nominee that Hillary Clinton, if she were president, would put up.”

Thursday’s remarks were less explicit, but given that the ninth, empty seat on the court belonged to Antonin Scalia, any Democratic nominee would tilt it to the left. They also came a few hours after Dan Holler, a vice president at Heritage Action, briefed reporters on a no-go strategy toward a possible Clinton court pick.

“You’ve seen John McCain and others talk about the need to not confirm any liberal nominated to the Supreme Court,” Holler said, according to The Hill. “That’s exactly the right position to have.”

I was wondering this week if somehow heaven forbid Trump won the presidency but Dems won the senate, would they have the stones to not approve any justice he puts up.

Sadly, I'm pretty sure they wouldn't.

I have gotten to a point where I can't stand to look at him. He may have been a hero at one time, but he has become one of the enemy, as far as I'm concerned.

Voters do. And if we vote for left leaning progressive leaders, then that's what the VOTERS want sir.

Elections have consequences.

...because they are never held accountable for their actions.

Not by the voters.
Not by the media.
And far too often not by the Democratic party that is supposed to oppose them at all possible turns.

Which is why I really hope this shitshow of an election has woken up the Democratic party and all the folks who control it. They can't play nice any more and they can't try to thread an ever narrowing needle.

They need to start playing the hardball that the other side has been playing for the last 20 some years.

I have posted this countless times.

They get away with this shit because this country NEVER holds them accountable.

Not the media, nto the voters.

And, you spot on that the democrats enable it by being so god darned soft.

It will NOT stop until democrats get a fucking spine and HIT THEM HARD ON IT.

If it were democrats who refused a vote for a SC nominee like what has occured with Garland, the Rs would be screaming bloody murder. Barely a peep from Ds on this.

And, if there were Ds saying BEFORE THE ELECTION they were gong to hold hearings and impeach the R candidate, they would be screaming PARTISANSHIP and have the media backing their play.

Has one democrat even used that word during BHO's tenture?

I don't believe the answer is for Dems to become as obstinate as Repubs. I don't think that solves anything. And certainly you can't say that Harry Reid -as an example - is in anyway playing nice with the other side.

The repubs aren't playing hardball. In fact, their signature move is to not play ball at all. And this is a party that is disintegrating before our very eyes, a messy chaotic demise.

Let's not play their game of hardball.

Let's not follow their lead.

Let's just lead.

They go low, we go high. <--- That.

peace.

....and we've regressed on all fronts of our society except the most very narrow ways.

I'm not sure where you see their party paying a price and disintegrating before our very eyes. Are you not seeing a failed businessman, vocal racist and misogynist, admitted lawbreaker, riot and violence inciting, literal hate group quoting Republican candidate running near to even with the Democratic candidate? Do you see any signs of the impact of Republican gerrymandering being reversed in our lifetime?

So...you know.....when? And yes, Harry Reid is a bit stronger than most Dems but nothing compared to the hardline that Republicans hold.

I'm just not willing to continue this 1 step forward, 2 steps back that our current approach has gotten us.

get rid of the filibuster on ALL judicial nominees. Actions have consequences. The GOP have shown that they are willing to allow the federal bench to stay vacant for their own gain. It's time for Dems to pack the court.
