2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIt's happening tomorrow!
My wife and I are waking up bright and early tomorrow before the sun rises and we're driving back to our original voting district (we moved so we have to go back there to vote) so that we can cast or votes for Hillary.
We tried the other day but GOD DAMN THOSE LINES. I'd imagine tomorrow will also be terrible but, earlier will be better and we've got to do it.
Our hearts will always follow Bernie, but we know Bernie is right when he says Hillary must win this.
Wish us luck in waking up to our alarm clocks!

(10,345 posts)An odd calm has befallen me in recent days, through all the chaos and the bullshit.
I just, for some reason, have faith in my fellow countrymen. Or at least enough of them.
I'll be voting the day of. It'll be in a state that doesn't matter (Tennessee), but I will proudly tell my offspring one day that I was one of the people who knew better.

(9,313 posts)All over states and counties are cutting back resources to "save" money.
The most obvious result is long lines.
We need federal laws that set a maximum allowable wait time and penalize any state or county agencies responsible for the under-allocation of resources that led to the lines.
LINES are no different that the POLL tax.
TIME = MONEY. The idiom is part of the vernacular for a reason. Time is VALUABLE.
If we're going to allow lines, we might as well just bring back the poll tax.
An election is neither free nor fair when it "costs" ANY voter an hour, or many hours.
It needs to be Federal. We could try to do it state by state, but that will go nowhere in "Red states." (Particularly with the latest about the Koch bros putting big money into getting "their" people elected SOS.)
Penalties must be substantial enough to cost the state or county much more than than any "savings" they may have gained by cutting resources in a way that resulted in long lines.
Other ideas welcome, but I think the only way things will change is to create a monetary incentive to allocate sufficient resources to run elections well.

(28 posts)Voted last week here in Oregon. No stamp needed. Dropped into local county drop box.
Straight Dem ballot.
Vote by mail should be nationwide but that would be too easy.
