FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.Republicans typically perform well around military installations.
At a rally yesterday afternoon just outside of Fort Bragg, the worlds biggest Army base by population, Barack Obama crisply summarized why Democrats hope this year will be different and why the Clinton campaign is competing so aggressively for the votes of active duty service members, their families and veterans.
Listen, if you want to keep our military the greatest fighting force that the world has ever known
then we cant have a commander-in-chief who suggests that its okay to torture people, the president said, referring to Donald Trump. We can't afford a commander-in-chief who insults POWs [like John McCain], who attacks a Gold Star mother, who actually talks down our troops (and) says he knows more than our generals.
Obama recalled a briefing he received just hours after being inaugurated on how to launch nuclear weapons. It will sober you up, he said. We can't have somebody like that handling our nuclear codes.
-- North Carolina has a massive military presence. More than 50,000 active duty personnel are assigned to Fort Bragg. Camp Lejeune in Jacksonville houses several Marine Corps combat units and support commands. The Air Forces 4th Striker Wing is based in Goldsboro. With every poll showing that this state remains a true toss-up, strategists on both sides see these communities as top targets.

(58,604 posts)that support for Trump was that strong among military personnel and veterans. This veteran certainly doesn't feel anything but disdain for Trump.

(2,003 posts)in the active duty and retired military demographic. Even Johnson is polling better than Hillary Clinton.
I don't know what the WP is smoking to conclude that military families are going to put Hillary Clinton over the top in NC.
If she wins NC, it won't be because of the military vote. It will be despite them.

(13,542 posts)you might do a lot better than just military personnel. Quite a few military wives would not vote for Trump. I can't see that making the difference though. We'd be lucky to get a push out of that.

(7,133 posts)Not just his insults and empty bragging and rank ignorance about the military, and the fact that he got out of Vietnam due to a canker sore or some shit. But really, how can anyone in uniform ignore the fact that Trump is in bed with the Russians, that he has probably been compromised and blackmailed by them? That he wants to destroy our alliances and the post-WWII order and serve up America's friends to the goddamn Kremlin? Why do these facts not register with so many in the armed forces?

(15,265 posts)My experience working with and around the military is that the biggest reason the military love Republicans is because they believe Republicans will keep increasing the military budgets and thus keep them employed. It's doubtful they even give much thought to "oh, this person might get me and my friends killed". I think it's only 10% of all military members who ever see combat. That leaves 90% with relatively safe jobs and retirements to protect.
It doesn't have anything to do with war and peace, just the keeping the military-industrial complex flush with money.

(11,427 posts)In Texas voting for Hillary and they are moderate republican. They started with Trump long time ago but moved when he said he was for punishing women for abortions.
I haven't asked her what others on base think, since she moved conservative about 5 yrs ago it saves our relationship not to talk politics.
