Calls by Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump for his supporters to watch for fraud at the polls have raised concerns about a longstanding but little used Election Day tactic citizen voter challenges.
At least four battleground states Florida, Iowa, Nevada and Pennsylvania not only allow private citizens to challenge the eligibility of other voters inside polling locations but place the burden of proof on the person who is challenged. In Florida and Pennsylvania, a challenged voter in certain circumstances must cast a provisional ballot that may or may not be counted.
Voting experts said they do not expect such challenges to be widespread. They also said anything is possible on Tuesday following Trumps unprecedented and unsubstantiated warnings of a rigged election.
In states where the burden rests heavily on a voter who is challenged, untrained private citizens could create chaos.

(459 posts)in "certain areas" and you know where they are i can imagine a trump supporter that challenges votes would be in for the worst beating of their life. a lot of people do not take kindly to these repulsive and hostile tactics.

(14,561 posts)A person challenging a voter in Pa has 1) be from that precinct 2) Has to pay, cash in hand at the poll $10 to make the challenge 3) The person who is being challenged still gets to vote and his or her ballot is counted. 4) The challenge goes to the county office to be reviewed. If that person was not eligiable they will be taken off the roles for future elections.
