If Trump were to become President, would you seriously think about moving?? I would! If you would too, let's all suggest where we would move to! I think I would move to Spain!

Nay
(12,051 posts)it would mean I'd most likely have to leave my son and his family behind. I don't think I could do that. However, there's nothing stopping me from staying in Canada 3-6 months out of the year, is there?
Siwsan
(26,259 posts)And I think I'd fit in, ok, because when ever I traveled overseas, people would always ask me what part of Canada I was from. That always made me smile. Which, perhaps, is why they thought I was Canadian?

(7,581 posts)I'd move there, or France. If they'd have me.
I have been living in Germany for years.

(4,291 posts)At first I thought of either Denmark or Austria (because I have family there).
But then, I decided that I would remain here and -- given the opportunity -- join a democratic, underground movement.
Hey, if it's not sedition for Repukes to call for open, armed revolt when Hillary wins, how would this be any different?

Yes, I know. Still the US. BUT, way out in the middle of nowhere and not populated by gun nuts and bigots or easily accessible
by other gun nuts and bigots.
I don't have the patience or stamina to handle moving to another country at my age (65) with a husband (74) who has health issues.
Beautiful country, sophisticated cities, friendly people. The earthquakes could be problematic though.

(40,416 posts)Unlike the USA where the building of a world class telescope on the best summit in the northern hemisphere, Mauna Kea, is being opposed because of volcano gods!
And this by people whose ancestors settled the Hawaiian Islands, from thousands of miles away, in canoes because they could fucking navigate by the fucking stars!

Any thoughts on that? It's just dirt, after all.
longship
(40,416 posts)I support the telescope because it will have almost zero impact on their sacred lands on the largest mountain summit on the planet, only a very small part of which is the astronomical observatory preserve.
Plus, nearly nothing can live up there, least of all astronomers who control the telescopes from much lower altitudes. Those who service the telescopes have to acclimate themselves to the altitude, and there is always bottled oxygen available.
So, I don't believe the claim that very many people worship up there for a minute.
And as their history attests, they founded their settlements in Hawaii because they could navigate across the Pacific Ocean by the stars, in canoes! Their 21st century descendants conveniently forget that part. They're Luddites. Build the TMT. It does no harm and a whole lot of good.

(40,416 posts)The reason this was done is that it is the absolute best place in the northern hemisphere for observational astronomy, bar none!
Second, the observatory preserve is a very small fraction of the Mauna Kea summit. BTW, Mauna Kea is the largest mountain on Earth. so there is lots and lots of summit that is not the observatory preserve.
Third, I don't know how many native Hawaiians worship up there, but if they do I would recommend that they take bottled oxygen, just in case, lest they die up there.
Fourth, the observatory preserve is not being expanded by the building of the TMT.
Fifth, the TMT in no way will spoil the view of the summit. It's large, but as I pointed out, it is the largest mountain on Earth and the observatory is small in comparison. One cannot see any of the observatory from sea level.
Sixth, there is no rational reason to oppose the TMT. It has zero impact on their ancient religious views, those of people who fucking navigated across the fucking Pacific Ocean in fucking canoes using the fucking stars!
In other words, they are Luddites.

(1,907 posts)Just don't know if I could afford staying. With all the high import tariffs he wants, privatizing roads, the cuts to social security, and medicare. That he and the repubs want. It may not be by choice. Remember the trickle down economics tax stuff from raygunz. Then poppa bush saying no new taxes but having to raise taxes. Dipshits tax deal would end up worse for the average American.

Only for about 3.25 years though, as after that it would be time to come back and retake our country to sanity....
