Leesburg, in Louden county, is part of the big Northern Virginia Democratic firewall, which is why the state has been trending blue in recent presidential elections, why we have 2 dem senators, and a dem governor. The other two counties are Fairfax and Prince William. Fairfax alone is over 1 million residents, which is about 1/8 of the state. Prince William is one of the ten or so counties that are the swing counties that have been identified as the ones that actually determine presidential elections. All three are affluent, highly educated, and multiethnic. Many residents work in government, government contractors - think Pentagon, or lobbyists. Also a number of universities and the spinoffs they usually produce.
But, there is the rest of the state, so the legislature is controlled by the republicans, why we have gerrymandered districts. The southeastern part has a big military footprint. Richmond is somewhat bluer than the wesrern and southwest parts which are Applachian and hurting.
