The Counties That Flipped From Obama To Trump, In 3 Charts

... Wisconsin — the state that ended up putting Trump over the top in the electoral vote early Wednesday morning — 22 counties that had once voted for Obama switched to Trump. Some of those counties — such as Sawyer, Forest and Adams — have some of the highest unemployment rates in the state..

1. Jesus. Absolute bloodbath for us in the lesser populated areas, compared to 2012

That's where we need to start fighting for votes again. We'll still lose 90% of those counties, but we need to keep the margins more respectable--difference between victory and defeat was those counties being pink vs dark red.

4. that's part of it, but look at, for example, Minnesota or New York in the first chart

There's no vote suppression in either state. But there was a catastrophic collapse for us in the areas outside the cities there. Dark blue became light blue, light blue became light pink, light pink became dark red.

Story of 2016 pretty simple--our white voter problem got worse and their black/brown voter problem actually got better (less turnout with slightly worse margins than 2012, plus the RNC was doing actual Latino outreach even while Trump was ranting).

7. I had an uneasy feeling about making it all about Donald's disgusting sexism

As horrifying as his behavior has been, let's face it, a lot of people didn't care. And I understand that trump came with daily controversies so it was hard to settle on just one.

We defeated Romney with the economy argument and could have easily defeated trump the same way, between his taxes, bankruptcies, stiffed vendors, Trump U, hiring undocumented workers, his shady ass charity, Chinese steel purchases, conflicts of interest, Cuba, etc. The sexism and bigotry could have been exposed moreso online, as additional information but not the main focus.

That being said, we can't ignore the role of the media, FBI, Supreme Court (who gutted the voting rights act), and Russians in this tragedy.

5. AZ didn't change a bit from 2012 to 2016. Impressively consistent counties.

Unlike the rest of the nation AZ is red as hell in the counties with the two largest cites and blue (albeit light blue) in some of the rural parts.

One of the most backward places in the world. No jobs, low wages and no hope. Sure was pretty, though.
