Wisconsin just upped their fee to recount from 1.1 million to 3.5 MILLION -trying to block recount

Guess we all need to donate a little more!!! Sounds like Wisconsin really is fearful of a recount. From Jill on Facebook:

Friends, I have an important message to you. We need your help to stand up to the powerful forces trying to block our recounts campaign for citizen democracy. We received word yesterday that the final estimate for the filing fee for the recount in Wisconsin is $3.5 million—an outrageous cost increase from the initial estimate of $1.1 million that was given to us by WI state elections officials based on the last statewide recount. But thanks to over 130,000 small-dollar donors like you, we have enough money in hand to pay this fee and move forward with the recount!

I’ll be coming live to you on Facebook later today to discuss this new development and where we need to go from here. Despite the outrageous obstacles being thrown in our way, we are determined to keep standing up for democracy and for a voting system that we can trust. Please tune in then.

We stand by our commitment to verify that the vote in Wisconsin was accurate and secure and this exorbitant cost will not deter us. While this excessive fee places an undue burden on our efforts, we are committed to paying this cost in order to ensure that the voting in Wisconsin was accurate. It is another sign of a democracy in crisis that ordinary citizens must pay so steep a price in order to assure the validity of our votes. The grassroots demand for a recount in Wisconsin, Michigan and Pennsylvania will not be stopped, and we look forward to working with the Elections Commissions in Wisconsin and the other states to see this through. We will be alerting recount advocates that we must now raise an additional $2.4 million dollars to cover this new extraordinary burden in Wisconsin. In doing so, we are committed to ensuring that a secure vote should not come at such an unconscionable cost. As citizens in a democracy, it should be our right.

For the same reason that everyone has to pay to protect their Civil Rights. I remember a song from long ago, from a troop of singers. They would come out with their opener, "Freedom isn't Free." And they're right. This country talks about Civil Right in the abstract. But, in the concrete, real world, our American Rights have been privatized. You want them? You'll have to pay a lawyer, eventually, in order to exercise them.

Randi was a big Bernie fan, but is giving Hillary her 100% now.

Greg Palist said he would be coming out with a post of questions and answers about the recounts.

Ever wonder how Scott Walker survived his recall vote?

It is time for America to wake and smell the coffee and that is republicans cheat.

Brownback won Kansas even though republicans and democrats did not like him in Kansas.

The democratic Sec. of State in Kentucky lost by 9 points even though he was 5 points up
going into the 2015 governor's race.

All the energy was spent getting the signature for the recall. People were tired of it by the time the recall election came along. Additionally, the Repubs painted teachers as the enemy quite well and people were pissed at the time of the recall.

There was nothing dirty in that recall other than taint of the tactics used to get the votes.

... were huge.

A study showed a 12 point "drift" to Walker post election. Although I don't live in
WI i followed the recall and remember noting that 2 very red counties in N.W. WI
had more signatures for a recall then Walker had votes in the prior governor's race.

It's not a surprise that the state commission, which is basically controlled by Scott Walker, is gonna stand in the way of this no matter what. And they're not adverse to making big bucks off of it either.

That said, it's really disingenuous of Jill Stein to claim that they don't have the money. They're raised nearly $7 million already to fund the recounts in WI/MI/PA and associated legal fees, which is more than enough to cover this new increased fee up front. Honestly, this massive hypocrisy is why she gained no traction - she accuses other candidates of being disingenuous (using the same "proof" that the GOP has been pushing for 40 years), then turns around and does exactly the thing she just accused someone else of.

Filing Fees alone: WI, $1.1 million; PA, $0.6 million, MI, $0.5 million. Add to this attorney's fees for each filing ($2-3 million), and statewide recount observers ($2 million). And now an approximately $2 million add-on by WI.

Or still left up to the clerks? Will the counts INCLUDE the provisioal and absentee ballots? Don't we need the hand counts to prove the numbers are wrong?

Michigan officials are estimating that the recount will cost 2-3 times what the cost to Stein will be making the taxpayers responsible for the difference.

Stein has the right to request a recount and the cost is specified in the law, but it isn't right that someone who got 1% of the vote should be able to put that burden on the state when there is very little chance of it succeeding. I hope the Michigan Legislature revises the recount fees similar to Wisconsin's moving forward.

My understanding is that if there is a recount in Michigan, the counties will have to eat the difference between the actual cost and what Stein pays.

If they don't spend the $3.5 million, she'll get a refund.

Of course, if she wins in court and gets a hand recount, she should expect $3.9 to look like a bargain.

Fact that they want to raise it to 3.5 million speaks volumes to the corruption. Now more than ever, this recount needs to happen.

Boy. I didn't realize how dirty Wisconsin has become. Should have known since Paul Ryan is there...
