Obama Mulls Far Broader Gun Control
The White House "is weighing a far broader and more comprehensive approach to curbing the nation's gun violence than simply reinstating an expired ban on assault weapons and high-capacity ammunition," the Washington Post reports.
The measures "would require universal background checks for firearm buyers, track the movement and sale of weapons through a national database, strengthen mental health checks, and stiffen penalties for carrying guns near schools or giving them to minors."
Key point: "To sell such changes, the White House is developing strategies to work around the National Rifle Association that one source said could include rallying support from Wal-Mart and other gun retailers for measures that would benefit their businesses."

He's looking for reasonable solutions that have a chance of success in passing and in actually reducing violence over time.

Or apologize.

(1,800 posts)You have been an Obama detractor from before he was elected
and you will likely be so until he finishes this term.
Do you really the your attempts at obfuscation can hide this?

(34,589 posts)I was an Obama supporter in the 2008 primaries, the election, did a spit-take when he appointed Rahm and Summers, then knew the fix was in when he started talking about the need to cut Social Security a week or so before his first inauguration.
Look it up.
I expect an apology.

(836 posts)No clips, magazines, cylinders, drums, etc. Six months to turn anything else in. You're paid $500 for each banned weapon. Get caught it's an automatic five years.
Flame on.

Even though I have no idea what drums are in relation to guns.
But then I thought magazines were something people read in the doctors office.

(39,171 posts)they are the real obstacle. Harry Reid is an NRA supporter and there are at least 10 Democratic Senators from conservative, pro-gun states seeking reelection in 2014.
Gun control will die in the Senate.

(39,171 posts)This was the story a week after your article.
Senate Democratic leadership sources tell CNN that passing any new legislation will be extremely difficult because more than a dozen vulnerable Democrats from conservative states will probably resist much of what the president is pushing.
These Democratic sources say the most likely legislation to pass will be strengthening background checks, since it is the least overt form of gun control and it also appeals to gun rights advocates' emphasis on keeping guns away from people with mental health and criminal problems.
Democratic leadership sources say they intend to spend next week -- the first week the Senate is in session -- canvassing red-state Democrats to see what, if anything, is doable. Democratic senators who advocate various gun control measures will be lobbying their colleagues as well.

Some laws will be passed but no AWB.
btw - I support the President's EOs plus universal background checks and a limit on magazine size.
