WILLIAMSBURG, Va | Fri Jan 18, 2013 12:41pm EST
(Reuters) - U.S. House Speaker John Boehner said on Friday there should be no long-term increase in the federal debt limit until the Senate passes a budget, and House Republicans will try to force the Senate into action to cut spending.
"We are going to pursue strategies that will obligate the Senate to finally join the House in confronting the government's spending problem. The principle is simple: no budget, no pay," Boehner said in excerpts of his closing remarks to a Republican House retreat.
The Senate has not passed a formal budget resolution in nearly four years, as Congress has relied largely on stop-gap funding measures to keep government agencies and programs running.

(31,798 posts)The Senate has not acted on it. They could pass their version and send it to conference committee to merge the two bills but for whatever reason there has been no vote taken. http://articles.cnn.com/2012-03-29/politics/politics_house-gop-budget_1_gop-budget-budget-plan-republican-budget?_s=PM OLITICS

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. Under a bill to be considered next week, House Republicans will propose raising the debt ceiling for three months long enough, they say, to give both chambers time to pass a budget. The measure will provide that if either the Senate or the House fails to adopt a budget by April 15, members of Congress would not be paid.
This is the first step to get on the right track, reduce our deficit and get focused on creating better living conditions for our families and children. Its time to come together and get to work, said House Majority Leader Eric Cantor (R-Va.), in a statement outlining the plan.

(11,495 posts)They should say OK, we will start with subsidies and tax breaks for the oil companies, then go on to subsidies for corporate farms, and then take away any subsidies or tax breaks for every corporation in the country that makes over say a million dollars per year in profits.
And of course they should take away all the perks congress gets, such as taxpayer health care, and retirement. Let congress pay for their own health care, and let them have social security as their retirement plan.
I am sure there are other things that could be cut from the "upper" income groups, but this would be a good start!

(24,353 posts)is nothing but a smokescreen to cover up their own shenanigans. The Budget Resolution is essentially meaningless (it's the appropriation bills that inform actual spending) and the Republicans would never agree to anything more progressive than the Ryan Budget. IMHO this is more about the Republicans trying to force Democrats to propose/pass a "budget" with cuts to Social Security and Medicare so that they can promptly reject them and run against them in 2014 (and probably 2016 as well). Also, given how dysfunctional Congress has been since 2007 and the level of obstructionism and brinksmanship by Republicans, I fail to see how the Senate AND the House will ever manage to agree/compromise on a Budget Resolution. I think that if Republicans would push their extremists to the side and start being more reasonable, maybe Congress can start operating like it's supposed to.
