2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumIs George Bush (Dubya) still alive?
It is almost suspicious that he is lying very low for an ex president. He was not at Obama's inauguration and he hasn't been seen much in public. Is it possible that he might be suffering from some disease?

I think he was more than happy to go back to a more discrete life. He never seemed to enjoy the presidency or politics that much. More like something he had to do to please Daddy (or Mummy).

(22,651 posts)Something happened way back when Bush ran out of that meeting with all his admin screaming, McCain and Obama were there at that meeting. Once the election was over, President Bush said "I'm out of politics" and so it was.
Cheney became a citizen of Dubai but he's met several times (closed door) with our current Congress and with Romneys people during the elections. Not Bush, hes outsider or scared of something.

(44 posts)The job he really wanted was to be baseball commissioner and at that he probably would have been pretty good.
It was between him and Jeb at the time, but Cheney knew he couldn't control Jeb the way he could W. So George it was.

(3,502 posts)I think he was honestly in way over his head. Being president was hard work if you were actually doing it. Obviously he wasn't and people kept finding out that he was without a clue. All he wanted to do was work out and spend some quality time with his pretzels and I guess now he can.

(14,543 posts)just looking at his life history and seeing his personality.
He wanted the job to have people kiss his ass and be able to do what his father did.
But, he wanted no part of DOING the job.

(3,003 posts)Probably enjoying life at his ranch and basking in the lifetime pension and cadillac health insurance coverage which we have to pay for.
Honestly, I've given him very little thought since he left office. His presidency was such a nightmare I don't even want to remember it.

(70,291 posts).... "the ranch" was just a prop where W could pretend to have country roots.
The cattle were rentals and brought to the property before the President and
his family were supposed to be there. The story is that Laura was not too fond
of the smell of bull shit.

(130,151 posts)As to 'cadillac health insurance coverage,' he has the same type as all other retired Federal employees, including me and my family, has to pay monthly premiums and co-pays. The various options are excellent, as OPM does a good job of negotiating them for Federal employees.

(4,551 posts)He briefly appeared for a segment on CNN's Piers Morgan a year or so ago where he (snicker) talked about how much he wanted to give back to the troops/National Guard (that he ran out on when he was younger).
Both Bush and the RNC realize that he should not appear much in public for at least a few more years because they know how low his approval ratings are. Exit polls in November also showed more people still blame him for the economic problems than Obama.
Meanwhile, Bill Clinton's situation is the opposite. He has a 66% approval rating and was a valuable part of the Democratic Convention and campaign trail for Obama and other Democrats. Dems from one end of the country to the other request his presence - he will be appearing at a 2014 fundraiser for Sen. Mark Pryor of Arkansas in a month or so.

(14,177 posts)They are keeping him locked up in the attic until he kicks off. Then they will reveal he had Alzheimer's during the last couple years of his life, which will have really been the last couple of decades. I don't know why they bother hiding him though. It's not as if anyone would notice he is acting like he lost it.

(63 posts)He's the worst President ever to us on the left with an endless stream of crimes committed against our nation and people of the world.
But its even trickier on the right. Bush is a RINO Big Government debt creator to the fiscal Tea Baggers. The Paul-Bots despise his failed neocon nation building foreign policies. The fear filled close the border crowd hate him for his immigration efforts. What's left? People on the Christian right may say a few nice things but many fall in the categories above. Few care for him and at this point NONE of them want him in the open as a reminder of how GOP led government works. Simply put Dubya is a nasty skidmark on the GOP brand that they can't bleach out soon enough.
I personally feel he never wanted the true "job" of being President and dealing with the intracancies of being the most powerful person invthe world. He probably thought it'd be as easy as being Governor of Texas (how hard is it to take a hatchet to government, sign off on Death Penalties, make Jesus day, and coast along with little Democrat opposition?). Didn't work that way and I think it made him a bitter man that doesn't understand why most people hate him.
Beacool
(30,244 posts)He said when he left office that the job was hard enough without former presidents second guessing the current president. He didn't appreciate it when it was done to him (he clarified that it wasn't 41 or 42, that left only Carter) and that he didn't plan to do the same to Obama.
The official reason given for him not attending the Inauguration was that his dad had just left the hospital and he wanted to be with him.
sofa king
(10,857 posts)GWB is a narcissist who requires excessive adulation from those who served him, and everyone else. He would be smack in the middle of politics today if someone and something weren't sitting on him.
Because right now he's back to kissing the same corporate asses he kissed before he screwed everything up. That suggests to me that something is curbing his ignorant but powerful ambitions.
Probably the threat of decades in prison for a random sampling of the laws he broke every single day he was in office. I know that if I were President Obama, I would have sat the chump down before he left and said, "if I hear a cross word from you, I'll open the books, wreck your family's position in politics, and put you away forever."
So he'll live the rest of his small and pointless life with his neck in the guillotine, knowing that there is no statute of limitations on many of the things he approved without a moment's thought.

May the gods and goddesses keep our memories sharp and spare us such a fate.
