Please note also, though, that not all undocumented immigrants are here because of illegal border crossing (the rubric also includes "visa overstays," which can be from countries like Poland, etc.) While Mexico, as of 2009, remained the highest in terms of point of origin, "other" was next highest, followed by the countries in this chart:

I was trying to figure out whether the percentage of undocumented immigrants in a state had anything to do with political attitudes toward amnesty/path to citizenship, but I'm not seeing it. I think it has more to do with entrenched attitudes. The link to current unemployment rates seems to be less of a factor as well.

The land was legally stolen or purchased, so stop saying that!

5. There is only one way to stop illegal immigration

And it is not fortifying the border; it is throwing the people into jail that hire them along with large fines for the company that does hire them.

Once people stop hiring the undocumented immigrants they will stop trying to illegally come here.


The GOP will never agree to it the employers love the cheap labor they can exploit.

6. I'd rather see an effort to raise the minimum wage and enforce the labor law

with no regard to immigration status. I don't give a damn who lives here as long as my wages aren't being undercut!
