BREAKING: Rep. Conyers introduces bill to repeal the sequester

You read that right. Action from a member of the Congressional Progressive Caucus. The bill is H.R. 900, introduced today (February 28) and it’s a Big Deal. Now the House has something to vote on, and the House Progressive Caucus has something to support. The bill — just cancel the sequester.

According to two sources, here’s the text:

“Section 251A of the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act of 1985 is repealed.”

A way out out of this mess, for now anyway, and a clean one. If the president hates the sequester as much as he claims to, this will be easy for him to support, won’t it.

Huge props to John Conyers for providing a bold (and simple) solution. For more on “cancel the sequester,” see here. For how the sequester is just one more manufactured crisis, see here (one place of many).

How you can help

Next steps are to push.

The bill needs co-sponsors. Feel free to call your Congress guy or gal and make the request.

Now we get to see in clear cut terms whose sequester it is. Come on GOP, go ahead... vote against it.

I think it is a valiant effort. I'm glad he did it. It won't go anywhere in the House.

The Republicans will be the clear enforcers of broadly hated legislation. Either way it's a win.

AGAIN.

These guys work 3-day weeks when they're in session, which is around half the number of weeks/year. Geesh, nice work if you can get it.

report this instead of using the Republican talking points? Boehner has always had the power to repeal the sequester just by introducing a Bill. President Obama has already said he would sign it. All they have to do is repeal it and not add anything to the Bill if they don't like the sequester. It is all in Boehner's court.

TITLE I--TEN-YEAR DISCRETIONARY CAPS WITH SEQUESTER

SEC. 101. ENFORCING DISCRETIONARY SPENDING LIMITS.

Section 251 of the Balanced Budget and Emergency Deficit Control Act
of 1985 <<NOTE: 2 USC 901.>> is amended to read as follows:
``SEC. 251. ENFORCING DISCRETIONARY SPENDING LIMITS.

More follows that describes what is going on, but as you can see the 2011 bill amends the 1985. I am not clear enough on all of the details to explain it better. There are others here that can probably do a better job. In any event that's how the 1985 bill comes into play.
