Ashley Judd is not running for Senate

Posted by Chris Cillizza on March 27, 2013 at 5:04 pm

Update: Ashley Judd has announced via Twitter that she will not run for Senate. “After serious and thorough contemplation, I realize that my responsibilities & energy at this time need to be focused on my family,” she wrote.

Actress Ashley Judd has decided not to pursue a bid for the Kentucky Senate race, according to two sources familiar with her decision.

A source close to Judd said that Secretary of State Allison Lundergan Grimes’ interest in potential race made the decision not to run easier. “The timing just wasn’t right,” said the source.

Judd’s potential candidacy against Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R) drew national headlines. While she received encouragement from the likes of Kentucky Rep. John Yarmuth, other Democrats in the state expressed apprehension about her candidacy.

Democratic Senate strategists have argued that Judd would be a good, if unconventional candidate, pointing to her ability to rival or even eclipse McConnell in fundraising. But McConnell’s path to victory involves savaging his opponent, and Judd’s status as an actress and celebrity would have offered him loads of ammunition.

have the resources and energy to discourage good people from running for office.

There are some good people in office, and I'm thinking of Sanders and Warren as two example, but they are rare.

If you don't think that such examples are rare, tell me who your other good politicians are.

And again, it's insulting to Judd and women everywhere to make your assumption.

By claiming she had something being held against her to keep her from running you are saying she has something desperate to hide.

That's insulting.

And to believe "the powers that be" will dictate what a strong intelligent woman decides is also insulting to Judd and women everywhere.

Not to mention it's tin foil hat stuff.

The rest of us here are not comprehension-challenged. Honestly, your remark was something I would expect from the other side.

to fit into the job of being a candidate with strings attached.

She had as good a chance to unseat the Turtle as anyone, imho. But Bill and his team prefer someone more 'malleable'.

I don't believe for a second that pressure wasn't put on her to not run and Billy Bob was the applier.

This can be as true as any bullshit we read about. Makes more sense, actually.

And as for what makes DU Suck ... perhaps the real cause of that could be the attribution of false or unproven motives to others.

I mean not that anyone on DU would ever suggest that Ashley Judd's motivation for not running for Senate would be anything different than what she has publicly stated as her motive.
