2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumI just don't see independent voters going for Newtie.
Am I wrong? I mean Newt has already insulted black voters, young voters, latino voters, and women voters. Who's left? Certainly he would win some southern white males and hard righties.
But how about independents? Not thinking they of the Newt persuasion.

(47,675 posts)As for younger voters, that's like asking them to chose between Dick Van Dyke and Jerry Lewis - if they know either of them, or even both, they won't know the difference.
Fortunately, it seems that younger voters are anti-establishment now in a way I haven't seen in my lifetime (well, to be fair I was a child in the 60's, so I might have seen it but not known what it meant).
Newt's closet is so full of skeletons that Tim Burton wants to make his next film in it. The GOP doesn't have a viable candidate. They're just letting the morons disgrace themselves with their own words and saving the potential candidates for 2016. It's actually rather clever if you think about it.

(13,877 posts)friends here in NH tells me that they are moving toward Obama. Some of these folks voted for Romney in the Primary and then were totally pissed off at his tax situation. None of these people were ever for Newt. I think Independent voters up here are thoroughly disgusted with the Republican Party.

(5,029 posts)I lived in Newt's district when he was a GA rep back in the 90s. There's so much dirt on him that he's not got a chance of winning the general election. He had over 80 ethical violations logged while he was Speaker of the House in a GOP controlled Congress. Thanks to the GOP control only one actually led to any kind of sanctions, but that's speaks volumes about just how corrupt he is.
He's also tied so closely to lobbying, which has become pretty much a bad word in voters minds, that he's not going to be able to draw much in the way of independent voters.
His temper is so explosive that if he does get the nomination he'll go ballistic under the attacks that are sure to come from all directions. Once he shows his ass he'll alienate a lot of independents.
Then he's got the same effect on Democrats that Clinton has on Republicans. Dems will come out just to vote AGAINST Newton. He's that hated by our party.
As far as the reports of voters going independent, I think that what we're seeing is voters distancing themselves from the GOP train wreck. If you're not a registered republican voter you don't have to sign loyalty oaths to support candidates you can't stomach. It also will make them feel better if they abandon their party for a third party candidate.
I think the GOP field is so bad that GOP turnout will be abysmal and the Dems could sweep the House and Senate and White House. That's my hope, anyway.
And I'm hoping Dems will be energized by all the promises kept by Obama and by the need to get the GOP out of the way to get jobs bills, etc passed. The obstructionist attitude of the GOP has been, to say the least, frustrating.

(34,857 posts)My mom's sister, who is about as conservative as you can get - loved Bush, hates Obama - said that if it's Gingrich-Obama this November, that she won't vote.
My guess is that she's not alone.
