2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumAre there any Democratic Benghazi Truthers out there?
My recollection has been that it's only been Republicans and their media hacks pushing this *story*. So, how are Republicans going to get this into the mainstream without finding Democrats willing to parrot their lines? AFAIK not even any of the most regressive Blue Dogs are jumping on this bandwagon and there's even one (relatively) high-profile Republican Senator, Bob Corker (R-TN) who's come out and stated that he's (mostly- I imagine him saying "completely" probably would tank his approval numbers with the teabaggers) satisfied that his concerns have been addressed, most likely because, unlike most Republicans pushing this *story*, it sounds like he actually read the briefings, documents, etc. whereas most of the rest of them have been spending more time on Fox News and/or holding press conferences instead of doing their homework on the matter.
When will the Republicans get over their "Benghazi flu"? When and where is this madness going to end?

instead of ignoring it and letting it be a 3day issue
They are using against Hillary, but the funny thing is, it only makes her stronger even her haters rally like in a disfunctional family who may yell insults at each other at a family house dinner, but if someone outside says something about my sister, I will defend her to the end.

Proud Liberal Dem
(24,396 posts)because Whitewater was initially seen as just a partisan witch hunt until a few Democrats hopped on board (or in bed) with Republicans requesting a special counsel to investigate it and it just went downhill from there. I hope that we're not about to see a repeat with this.

(5,756 posts)I hope you didn't get the idea I was slamming you for asking. There are a number of Democrats that do tend to check which way the wind is blowing to determine their position rather than having one based on sound policy and principle.
Proud Liberal Dem
(24,396 posts)Sadly, you're probably correct. Hopefully, the Dems don't pitch in to help the Repubs "save face" on this. I don't know any Democrats whom have said anything yet nor have I heard anybody outside of rabid right-wing circles even mention Benghazi. Like Jon Stewart said the other night, IF all of these things that the Republicans are hinting at and insinuting were true, then, yes, it would be very concerning but so far they haven't given anybody any real proof that anything scandalous actually has occurred and until that happens and/or they can clearly and concisely explain the situation and what they're so damned *concerned* about, I can't see this go anywhere but the political graveyard where things like Solyndra and "Fast & Furious" have long since been laid to rest. Everything might not have been "gravy" about what happened in Benghazi on 9/11/12 but so far it sounds like run-of-the-mill agency CYA and finger-pointing. No evidence that there was intentional wrong-doing and/or cover-up by the Obama Administration as much as the right-wing desparately hopes for there to be. Besides, if stuff is being covered-up, how do the Republicans know that it is indeed being covered up and what exactly do they think is being covered up? If they know, why aren't they telling?

(5,756 posts)I think it was in the Jon Stewart segment where it was replayed - the FOX & Friends host asked some Republican representative what exactly the cover-up was. The rep. stammered, stuttered, and then went on with deflection and talking points. Of course, he never answered the question. Because they don't really have a cover-up to point at since there wasn't one.
Proud Liberal Dem
(24,396 posts)but they don't let stuff like reason, truth, and common sense stand in the way of a good partisan witch hunt. They know by now (or should know anyway) that the media punditocracy- outside of a few notable exceptions- doesn't do its job and will happily parrot and report on any or all accusations they might make and will challenge them on very little. I was rather shocked to see somebody questioning their claims on, of all places, Fox News but it's just further proof of what a sham it is. I'm a bit disheartened that stories about Benghazi are starting to show up on ABC and elsewhere and encountering a lot more right-wing gloating over the issue but then again their heads are so far into the bubble they can't discern what is, for most of us, objective reality- where very people actually care enough to, well, care about the Republican accusations.

(2,730 posts)Chaffetz went on his fact finding mission to Libya, he was accused of not letting Democrats go with him. That should tell you, it is all a Republican scheme. They withhold all information from the Democrats. and they are still doing so, even with their latest trumped up hearing.

(11,785 posts)I think the Republican flap is 2/3 "we'll try anything to stir up some outrage" and 1/13 "it's not our fault for cutting funding because Obama/Hillary lied about arglebargleunhhhh."
