President Barack Obama on Monday attributed gridlock on Capitol Hill to a Republican Party that fears both its conservative base and perhaps the best-known right-wing shock jock.
"My thinking was when we beat them in 2012 that might break the fever, and its not quite broken yet. But I am persistent," Obama told donors at a New York City fundraiser for the Democratic National Committee, according to a White House pool report. "And I am staying at it. And I genuinely believe there are Republicans out there who would like to work with us but theyre fearful of their base and theyre concerned about what Rush Limbaugh might say about them. And as a consequence we get the kind of gridlock that makes people cynical about government."
It was one of three star-studded Democratic fundraisers Obama headlined Monday in New York. That particular event was hosted at movie mogul Harvey Weinstein's Greenwich Village home and was attended by pop star Justin Timberlake and his wife, actress Jessica Biel.
