With IRS defanged, politics can run rampant

By Gloria Borger, CNN Chief Political Analyst
updated 3:55 PM EDT, Wed May 15, 2013

(CNN) -- One of the most perverse results of the IRS's lame, overzealous -- and possibly criminal -- behavior in looking into the tax-exempt applications of assorted advocacy groups is this: They're a lot safer from scrutiny today than they were yesterday.

After this IRS mess, who in government is going to be in a rush to take on -- or try to regulate -- the groups they should actually be looking at as political operations, overt or covert? Um, not many.

Here's the real deal: It's an open secret in Washington that some of these groups, which spent huge amounts of money during presidential campaigns, are politically aligned. Whatever their "labels," as the IRS might call them, they have been tax-exempt because they claim to be dealing with issues rather than elections. That is, policy, not political candidates. But in the heat of a general election, when policy is politics, how can anyone tell the difference? ...

Of course, the fact that the GOP has stopped the Bush appointee of so many agencies from being moved out and replaced, is what the media continues to ignore. Obama is not a dictator, he is the one charged with putting into effect laws that he cannot get passed without the congress. Since 2010 the GOP has been obstructing on a level that in practical, but not legal terms, borders on treason. They have this coming and going. As PBO has repeatedly said, it's up to us to make this happen from state to state. That's how the elections were won while the media played the trumphets for the Tea Party, Ryan, Romney and the rest of the rotten crew. They didn't make any pretense of being neutral last year, were caught in outrageous editing out his words, distorting and flat denial of events. It's a mess. All we can do is keep going.

I officially now hate this country. The present GOP is the most odious organization to have existed in this country. How do these people live with themselves?
