2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumSupport Terry McAuliffe!
Ken the douche Cuccinelli won the republican primary for the Virginia gubernational race. This out-of-touch right-winger needs to be stopped.
If you support the rights of women and workers, support Terry McAuliffe, whether or not you live in Virginia.

(27,315 posts)I hope Democrats in VA think at what would be a state with such a governor. From all I know of him, it would make McDonnell look like a moderate.

(14,195 posts)Because if we do not draw the line, and steer our party BACK to our principles, then voting simply becomes a useless exercise between conservative and ultra conservative. Clearly McCauliffes "dems" are far right of me, as are Mark Warner and Obama.
So I will sit this one out. Sorry, if the so called " dem" and the repuke are both so pro biz and anti liberal.. Why exactly should I care who wins?
Perhaps the dems should start caring about progressives?

(15,438 posts)work out for you? Happy with the shit going on in Congress? Happy that Meals on Wheels is being cut drastically? Happy that the American Jobs Bill act is stalled in the House? Happy with all these non-scandals taking up all the time in the U.S. House instead of repealing the sequester, implementing ObamaCare, and getting jobs bills going?
How again does that serve the progressives? You Purists never learn. Fact of the matter is, this country will NEVER be progressive heaven and it's never been. Now with TeaBaggers taking over state houses and the U.S. House it's gotten worse. Either wise up already and vote to support Democrats or kiss your progressive agenda GOOD BYE.

I have met Terry McAliffe. I do not like him, do not respect him, and do not think he is a good candidate. Virginia could do much better.

(3,102 posts)any Democrats who can't bring themselves to do so. He's the perfect illustration of all that is wrong with the Democorpocratic party. The fact that he isn't as bad as Kookoonelli is not much of a point in his favor, since few are.
And if he loses, as far as I'm concerned, the party has only itself to blame.

(54,050 posts)Maybe McAuliffe called in some markers that were outstanding, who knows?
But Cucinelli is, as Howard Dean put it, a nut case, and deserves to be vigorously opposed. McAuliffe may come across as a used car salesman, but he won't send Virginia women to back alley abortions or out of state altogether to get one, and he won't try to gerrymander the state back to a permanently red one. McAuliffe is no Mark Warner, but Cucinelli is a right wing zealot, and it looks like his Lt.Gov candidate is even farther off the deep end.
In such a case, abstaining is letting a Ted Cruz or a Marco Rubio into the Senate because you didn't worship the alternative. If we had held out noses in Florida in 2010 and stood down to let Charlie Crist become Senator, we would have no Rubio phenomenon. Sometimes you have to do that. You're not sacrificing your ideals or your principles.
Maybe you're not doing a million dollar home improvement, but at least you're fireproofing it from burning down in the middle of the winter. Consider that a Cucinelli win is your home burning down in the middle of the winter, and that McAuliffe is putting in a little fireproofing. At least you'll HAVE a house to fix up after the winter. Cucinelli will burn it down first chance he gets, and he won't even give you a blanket (his budget doesn't permit it).
