Tonight our incumbent mayor was trounced in his attempt to win a second term...(61%-39%)

Both guys were Democrats and there is a Republican challenger but he doesn't stand a chance. Our town (Canton Mississippi, 15 miles north of the capital Jackson with a population of around 12000) is 80% black and the Democratic nominee is a lock.

I supported the challenger. The incumbent, William Truly has a medical practice and is known locally as "Dr Feelgood". You want pain killers, you get 'em. Need SSI for your kids, he'll help you out. His opponent, Arnel Bolden is a local insurance agent (20 some years and he covers our own home insurance and has been extremely responsive over the years). I'm really pleased.

We also get a new alderman in our ward-the incumbent, former two-term Mayor Alice Scott was humiliated when she finished third in the primary (another alderman was arrested by the FBI two weeks ago on the day of the first primary for bribery).

I may be wrong but I think the local food-kitchen manager upset the guy arrested by the FBI. If so, she is an ENORMOUS advantage for the good guys.

All in all, quite a housecleaning for a small southern town in central Mississippi. Democracy lives.....
