Obama: Gitmo Represents ‘An America That Flouts The Rule Of Law’

TOM KLUDT 2:46 PM EDT, THURSDAY MAY 23, 2013

President Barack Obama said Thursday that the detention camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba has become generated ill-will toward America and made allies less apt to work with the United States.

"The original premise for opening GTMO – that detainees would not be able to challenge their detention – was found unconstitutional five years ago. In the meantime, GTMO has become a symbol around the world for an America that flouts the rule of law," Obama said at National Defense University, according to text of the speech as prepared for delivery. "Our allies won’t cooperate with us if they think a terrorist will end up at GTMO. During a time of budget cuts, we spend $150 million each year to imprison 166 people –almost $1 million per prisoner. And the Department of Defense estimates that we must spend another $200 million to keep GTMO open at a time when we are cutting investments in education and research here at home."

Obama Asks DoD To Establish U.S. Site To Hold Tribunals For Gitmo Detainees

TOM KLUDT 2:52 PM EDT, THURSDAY MAY 23, 2013
In a major counterterrorism speech at National Defense University, President Barack Obama on Thursday shed light on his plans to close down the detention camp in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, including a request to the Department of Defense to designate a new site in the United States to hold military commissions.

"Today, I once again call on Congress to lift the restrictions on detainee transfers from GTMO," Obama said, according to text of the speech as prepared for delivery. "I have asked the Department of Defense to designate a site in the United States where we can hold military commissions. I am appointing a new, senior envoy at the State Department and Defense Department whose sole responsibility will be to achieve the transfer of detainees to third countries. I am lifting the moratorium on detainee transfers to Yemen, so we can review them on a case by case basis. To the greatest extent possible, we will transfer detainees who have been cleared to go to other countries. Where appropriate, we will bring terrorists to justice in our courts and military justice system. And we will insist that judicial review be available for every detainee."

As he outlined those proposals, however, Obama was interrupted by a heckler, who seemed to shout something about Guantanamo. The President engaged the woman, insisting that she allow him to speak.

I sure hope you do that, Mr. President. Please let us turn a new leaf, and let this be a defining moment.

President Obama to close it.

Only because they hate him.

Valid reason, huh?

Something tells me that even if Congress hadn't blocked the President and he transferred the detainees the day after his first inauguration you'd be entering comments here reading, "But, but, but, he didn't do it the way I wanted him to."

Actually, the time for asking is long past. He needs to ORDER this done and fire people who don't do it immediately. He is the president. He is in charge of the Executive Branch.

I happen to love Obama but he has really pissed me off with this Republican Lite crap.

Don't think it's an exaggeration to suggest that this speech will be seen by history as the rhetorical end of the War on Terror

Gitmo is a useless, unnecessary pimple on our blotchy 'war on terror' face. Let's pop it and end it.
Obama may have to pay hardball to make this happen. Put a prisoner transfer payment fee on the OK rebuild bill or the next Sandy Bill.
