Rep. Bobby Rush (D-IL) had some choice words Wednesday for a proposal by Sen. Mark Kirk (R-IL) aimed at curbing gang violence in Chicago, decrying the Republican's "upper-middle-class, elitist white boy solution" to the problem.
Kirk has been meeting with law enforcement personnel on a proposal for mass arrests of 18,000 members of the Gangster Disciples, one of Chicago's largest gangs. But Rush told the Chicago Sun-Times that Kirk's idea amounts to nothing more than an upper-middle-class, elitist white boy solution to a problem he knows nothing about.
The longtime congressman also called the proposal "headline grabbing" and insisted it will not work.
I am really very upset with Mark, Rush told the Sun-Times.

(68,868 posts)Locking up 18,000 people for belonging to a gang would be both logistically and constitutionally impossible.

This is not a practical solution, for all its obvious appeal. Among other things, there is no place to hold such numbers, either in the Federal or the local systems. Nor is there any reason to believe the people taken into custody would not be replaced in short order from the 'reserve army' of desperate and dispossessed persons present in the desolate neighborhoods that are the core of these bodies.
Are they planning on showing how/when/where they plan to do the lockup on TV - suspect it will be an interesting mini-series. Probably rated "X" for extreme violence.
