John Roberts Shows Cold-Blooded Calculation In His Supreme Court Rulings

But politically, these tolerant rulings on the country's social fabric deflect attention from the Roberts Court's deeper goal: to remove the federal government as an impediment to corporate, state and local power. In other words, to dismantle a framework of progressive laws and court rulings stretching back to Teddy Roosevelt, the New Deal and the Great Society.

"Roberts has a long-range plan for radical change," said Norman Ornstein, a senior scholar at the American Enterprise Institute. "And he's moving faster than he thought possible when he started eight years ago."

Viewed over a series of years, the major decisions of the Roberts Court exhibit a contrapuntal political rhythm -- and a sharp awareness of how it's all playing.

I keep thinking that if we tore off his head, a lizard would slither out.

to do if he ever achieved his own seat of power? He was a Constitutional lawyer in DC who traveled to Florida to volunteer his assistance on a pro bono basis.

"To the victors belongs the spoils" and George W. Bush* showed his deep appreciation to Roberts by giving him the Chief Justice seat on the Supreme Court, and we will be dealing with the consequences of that for decades.

He HAD to have known a lot of the threats the Republicans were making in Florida during that recount debacle were acts which were unconstitutional and could never have been executed. A prime example of that was the Republican legislature's threat that if Gore did win through a recount, it would still send a Republican slate to the Electoral College. The state constitution clearly stated at least at that time that the party of the slate would be determined by the winner of the popular vote. No state can change its state constitution after an election but before the Electoral College votes are counted in DC. Any changes to the constitution of the states cannot take effect until the NEXT election. Obviously, this is designed to prevent state politicians from trying to change the rules to impact or change the outcome of a legitimate vote. So the state legislature of Florida would have known had it followed through with this threat the Electoral College could have just thrown that slate out and not counted it in the final total -- which would have also made Gore the winner.

The message was really driven home to me at that time that Republicans will publicly say anything they believe people will accept. Now when legal issues arise and I question someone's interpretation, I do the research myself.

Long after Roberts leaves the Supreme Court his fingerprints will be all over people's lives in this Country for decades. The spoils, the spoils....
