GOP Rep. David Camp will NOT run for the open U.S. Senate seat in Michigan

Ways & Means Committee chair Camp will not run for open Senate seat

DETROIT (Reuters) – U.S. Representative David Camp said on Friday he would not run for Michigan’s open U.S. Senate seat in 2014 despite pleas from fellow Republicans that he would be the strongest candidate for the party.

Camp, chairman of the powerful Ways and Means Committee of the U.S. House, said he would focus instead on creating a “more effective and efficient” U.S. tax code in Congress.

“After much thought and careful consideration, I have decided not to run for the United States Senate,” Camp said in a statement.

His decision leaves Republicans without a leading candidate for the Michigan seat being vacated by longtime U.S. Senator Carl Levin, a retiring Democrat.

PPP has 3 polls over the course of the year and they all have Snyder down in the 4-5 point range. And that is with 38% of the voters that have never heard of the Democrat. Their last poll was early June which is after the Emergency Manager was appointed but before he had Detroit declared bankrupt. Another poll (an organization I have never heard of) taken in late July, which is after the bankruptcy filing, shows Snyder up by 6 points but it had 68% never having heard of the Democrat. Even in that poll they said that Snyder's 43% approval rating spells trouble for Snyder. In other words, it is still far too early to tell. Frankly, I was surprised that it was this close, given Snyder's union busting AND Emergency Manager record. Ever since Michigan went to a 4 year term for Governor in the 1960's the incumbent has won re-election (it didn't say whether any first term Governor failed to run for a 2nd term).
