Texas politician’s homophobic remarks caught on tape: ‘It’s just disgusting to even think about’

San Antonio mayor Julian Castro (D) quickly criticized one of his city council members on Friday after homophobic remarks by her came to light.

Council member Elisa Chan’s statements finding homosexuality “disgusting,” Castro told KENS-TV, were “hurtful and misinformed and they don’t reflect the views of the overwhelming majority of San Antonians.”

The San Antonio Express-News published audio on Thursday from a May 21 conversation between Chan and staff members regarding an update to the city’s non-discrimination policy which would add gender identity and sexuality as protected categories.

“Whatever you want to do in your bedroom is none of my business, but do not impose your view on other people, especially becoming policy,” Chan says at one point in the recording. “Because personally, I think it’s just disgusting just to even think about.” Chan also told her staff she did not believe “homosexual people” should be eligible for adoption, saying they would affect “the young people.”

KENS reported that Castro, seen as a rising figure in Democratic political circles, also went online to cite Chan’s remarks as a reason for the city to expand its anti-discrimination statute.
