It didn't hurt that she was (at least pretending to be) religious, or that she had a special needs child. Why, they even used Bristol's out-of-wedlock pregnancy to show what a wonderful family the Palin's are (not!). And the fact that she could shoot a gun, why - - - you betcha!!! She was their girl!

But I still think her looks were a consideration. Remember the base of the GOP: older, white, rich, powerful men.

Looks were definitely a major factor in why they chose Palin.

I find it hard to believe that any number of GOP women who had more relevant experience in government would have fallen short on the religion scale compared to Palin.

The GOP went with someone who was young and relatively attractive vs competent and experienced as a way to cancel out the Obama "youth" factor he had going against McCain.
