2016 Postmortem
Related: About this forumThe Obama administration has been working on Syrian plan with Russia for over a year.
A senior administration official confirmed to The Huffington Post that Obama and Putin first discussed the concept in Los Cabos at the G-20 in June 2012. After the first plenary session, while world leaders were mingling, Obama and Putin went to a corner of the room and spoke for nearly half an hour about Syria.
"Putin broached the idea that had been discussed in [a] previous meeting about reaching an international agreement to remove chemical weapons," said the official. "Obama agreed that could be an avenue for cooperation, and said that Kerry and Lavrov should follow up on the concept to shape a potential proposal. Putin agreed to relay that to Lavrov."
Kerry, Lavrov and Putin spoke about it again in April when the secretary of state visited Moscow.

In fact, the idea had been discussed on and off for weeks in a very tight circle, one administration official said -- a circle that included Kerry, the president, National Security Advisor Susan Rice and U.N. Ambassador Samantha Power. It surfaced in public in the Israeli press over the weekend, and Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov had talked about it well before that.
And Obama said in interviews Monday night that he and Russian President Vladimir Putin had discussed the idea at the G-20 last week. This wasnt an accident, said one top White House official.

(2,770 posts)If you think Obama didn't KNOW that Britain's vote would go the way it did, you are truly delusional.
The threat of a military strike doesn't carry much weight if you aren't willing to rattle your saber, loudly and publicly, despite knowing that the citizenry isn't behind you.
There are people on this site who were salivating over the idea of another war, solely for the reason that they wanted to paint Obama as a warmonger. And if a few thousand people died as a result, that was a price they were willing to see paid - if it meant an opportunity to do just that.
Hell hath no fury like self-proclaimed "peace lovers" who had their "Bloodthirsty Obama - The Warmonger" graphics ready to post, only to find out their chance to do so has been wrenched from their greasy little hands.

(13,685 posts)You think Obama knew GB would vote no?
Bwahahaha.
He was caught with his war pants down, naked to the world. Thankfully, as we expected when we voted him in, he turned smart and against the fucking warmongers who are getting old and finally fucking dieing off.
I don't give a fuck who is president. I am against wars. Your shit slinging just goes to show who is delusional.
Summer Hathaway
(2,770 posts)Everyone expected (Obama included) that GB was going to scream for involvement in another war! Why wouldn't they? They had so much fun in Iraq, it was a foregone conclusion that the Brits would want to get involved in another war!!!
Of course it was a COMPLETE SHOCK to the world that they didn't!
And, BTW, there is no such word as "dieing".
The fact that you believe that anyone, anywhere was expecting GB to jump aboard the war wagon is proof of who is being delusional here.

They don't want to engage in constructive debate, they want to see Obama humiliated and degraded. You can tell it by the language they use and their constant need to try to paint him as something "beneath them".
Its not even subtle anymore.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)See... that's the difference between us.
Your personal attacks show just where you are coming from so you get one backatcha. I guess you hate Michelle Obama too? You know she's against war on Syria? Are ya gonna go yell at her now? Try and make her love war?
phleshdef
(11,936 posts)No one here "loves war" and you know that.
My issue isn't your criticism of war or pro-war policies. My issue is with the way you and other Obama critics want to go beyond criticism. You want to get nasty and say something degrading about him and you don't seem to deal with it very well when the same attitude used on you.
You aren't criticizing, you are demonizing. And you aren't talking about Barack Obama the President, you are talking about Barack Obama the cartoon villain, who doesn't actually exist.

(13,685 posts)What you said about me is a fucking lie.
You are making Obama look bad.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)I mean, you should be thrilled that strikes are very unlikely, I am.
But you seem, really, really upset about how this is turning out.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)He's just the president. I should leave him alone, eh? Don't hold his feet to the fire, eh?
The only way he is really poor is that posters like you have stupid fucking complaints; thinking you are protecting him.
Fucking hilarious.
I campaigned for him twice in the deep south, so take your nasty little complaints somewhere where the sun don't shine. Take it and your warmongering, too. I'm sure Obama's wife won't miss you.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)In guess you missed it, he's just won another foreign policy victory.
And why do you keep bring up Michelle ... I have to believe that you and she are not friends.
I live in NC, btw ... not sure what your efforts here in the south have to do with anything.
You appear to be ranting now. You might want to take a break from all this.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)Laying yourself out there, aren't you. Telling lies and slandering Peace people is not what makes this country great.

(11,936 posts)Like I said, you don't handle your own attitude being used back on you. This thin skinned little reply is perfect evidence of that.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)No, Peace has won this victory. Obama heard us and he changed his mind.
He's smart like that. Not at all like the people who feel they have to tear down good Dems who are holding him to the promises he made about change.
He really doesn't need you, you know that? He does need folks like me.

(82,383 posts)That's just as silly as being rabid for a war.
Does this mean you are against the civil war ongoing in Syria? Are you against use of chemical weapons?
Summer Hathaway
(2,770 posts)You've got it ALL WRONG!
A reasonable solution is only being reached because Obama "bumbled" his way into it. It was never a plan - it's just an "accident" that things turned out this way.
In fact, everything Obama has achieved has been purely by "accident", or the result of DUers "holding his feet to the fire" and forcing him to do their bidding.
All of the above MUST be true because I read it here on DU.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)You know she's against the bombing. Is her hair on fire?
All you have is war and more war. Guess what? Peace people are winning, and Michelle Obama is with us.
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)a 2nd Iraq war? That he was a warmonger who was going to bomb the crap out of Syria no matter what?
If so, yes, I would say her hair was on fire.
btw ... I was against strikes, but would not have been surprised if they happened because I knew that the President was not bluffing.
The Combustible Hair Club is a DU phenomenon ... which can be seen in the ENDLESS OPs over the last 3 weeks predicting a 2nd Iraq war, and how Obama was hell bent on starting it.
Now, those who screamed the loudest are in a desperate search to determine why Obama does not deserve any credit for this outcome.
And I'm sure Michelle is not with you on that.

Your lack of knowledge of that and your slander against the Peace people is well noted.
Yes we are happy as hell the bombs have not dropped yet. Only war people would be happy to have been dropping bombs. People like Mccain.
What makes you think you know it all and feel that you can slander Peace people? What kind of koolaid are you drinking? Have you nothing better to do than issue whiny complaints that some people are holding Obama's feet to the fire?
JoePhilly
(27,787 posts)and not have their hair on fire. Plenty of people do, you just won't find them on DU.
And ... slander the "peace people" ... BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
btw ... endless whining and making predictions that are WRONG over and over, isn't "holding the President's feet to the fire" ... its just whining.
As for what I know ... well ... so far ... I've been right.
The folks screaming about how we're about to enter a 2nd Iraq war, wrong, wrong, wrong.
"Peace people" ... LOL .... hilarious.
RobertEarl
(13,685 posts)You find that people who don't want bombs dropped to be hilarious?
You are way out of your league and are making Obama look bad. You should just stop. He doesn't need your kind of help.

(27,787 posts)And now I'm making Obama look bad. I'm sure he checks DU every night to see what I'm up to.
