Back in 2011, Charles Koch held his annual meeting with donors to strategize for the 2012 elections. You might recall the audio recording we published from that meeting where he compared President Obama to Saddam Hussein, and congratulated the members in the room who had donated a million dollars or more to his efforts to buy the United States government.
In a pre-emptive move, the president of Freedom Partners, a trade association organized under section 501(c)(6) in a similar fashion to the US Chamber of Commerce, has released their IRS disclosure filing to Politico in advance of it becoming public.
The 38-page IRS filing amounts to the Rosetta Stone of the vast web of conservative groups some prominent, some obscure that spend time, money and resources to influence public debate, especially over Obamacare.
The group has about 200 donors, each paying at least $100,000 in annual dues. It raised $256 million in the year after its creation in November 2011, the document shows. And it made grants of $236 million meaning a totally unknown group was the largest sugar daddy for conservative groups in the last election, second in total spending only to Karl Roves American Crossroads and Crossroads GPS, which together spent about $300 million.

(273 posts)My buddy and I were talking about the latest list of the richest people in the world at the time.
He was surprised that you could get this kind of information about rich people.
I asked him, "Do you HONESTLY believe this is the list of the richest people? Or is it the list of the richest people who allowed themselves to be listed?"
He said of course it's the whole list.
I said, you don't think there is a Saudi or two not showing? Or maybe some folks from old Europe who have been sitting on mountains of wealth, resources, land? Some "president" somewhere that we're propping up and is selling the country's resources? An arms dealer in Belarus that resells Russian gear at a 100% markup, no questions asked? A Chinese party official that oversees exports of technology and totally doesn't skim or take a bribe here or there?
So back to your question, why are we just finding out about this now?
Because there's a ton of money interested in that not being common knowledge. The problem is, now that it is, nothing will be done about that level of influence.
So now the next question.
Is this really the full list of "Koch banks?" Or are there more that haven't been figured out yet?
